About

The Bangor Region YMCA, located at 17 2nd St, Bangor, ME, is a community-focused organization offering a wide array of programs and facilities for all ages. It provides amenities such as a fitness center, gymnasium, group exercise classes, and various aquatic programs, all aimed at promoting health, youth development, and social responsibility within the Bangor community.

The Bangor Region YMCA maintains two pools: the Lap Pool is kept at a temperature of 80-82 degrees Fahrenheit, and the Small Pool (often for warmer activities or therapy) is maintained at 88-90 degrees Fahrenheit.

What are people saying (AI review summary)? The Bangor Y receives mixed feedback, with many members praising its clean, well-maintained facilities, including decent workout areas with good cardio and free weights (though some desire more machine variety), an impressive pool, and a cycling studio. Group fitness classes are highly commended for their fantastic instructors, challenging workouts, and welcoming community, often described as a cornerstone for fitness. However, significant negative feedback targets management and specific programs. Concerns include a poor head swim coach leading to swimmer departures, with management seemingly unresponsive to issues. There are also complaints about last-minute course cancellations (specifically a babysitters course being canceled twice) and severe issues with delayed refunds and unhelpful customer service, particularly from the aquatics manager, Sidney. While staff are generally viewed as nice, potential understaffing is mentioned. The historic Isaac Farrar mansion, utilized for offices, is noted as an interesting architectural feature.

Staff seems really nice here although maybe understaffed. Workout facility are pretty decent. The pool area is actually very cool. I just didn’t take any pictures cause I thought it’d be odd. What’s really cool with the Isaac Farrar mansion that is a part of this YMCA. This house is an early 1830s build with plenty of history in architecture and they just use it as offices.

I LOVE the Bangor Y - it is truly the cornerstone of my fitness journey in Bangor. Wonderful group classes with the loveliest people you’ll ever meet. The instructors are ALL fantastic. The workouts are tough and refreshing. So happy with my membership! (I will just shout out the instructors I regularly attend classes with, thank you Tom, Barb, and Jenny for your leadership in class!)

They need to get a better head swim coach. A lot of good swimmers no longer swim because of him. Paul was a excellent coach and didn't get help either. Shaun has help with the other assistant coaches that should replace him. Diane been spoken to about this, and per usual did nothing!

Nice community YMCA with very nice fitness machines, dumbbells and cardio space. Well maintained and clean, though it lacks a variety of fitness machines. The free weight room downstairs had the minimum equipment including a bench, squat rack, dumbbells, etc, but nothing really stood out. Nice accessories for stretching and core work. Also has a nice small cycling studio and a four lane pool. Locker rooms are somewhat dated but did have a sauna. If no one is in a sauna it is usually powered down so I would suggest you power it up 15 minutes prior to using so it gets hot. A good average YMCA with the basics needed for a variety of fitness.

Going through a terrible experience after registering my daughter for a babysitters course only to have them email me less than 24 hours ahead to say it was canceled. This is the second time this has happened. I requested a refund for the class which is $150. Its been over a month and they have not refunded my card. I reached out several times to Sidney the aquatics manager who gave less than a friendly reply. I then escalated the issue and was assured I would have my refund "in the next day or so." Now a week later and still nothing and no follow through. Terrible service!
