The YMCA generally maintains different pool temperatures for various activities. Lap or cooler instructional pools are typically kept around 79-82°F (26-28°C). If available, warmer program or therapy pools are often maintained at higher temperatures, commonly in the range of 88-90°F (31-32°C), for comfort and specific aquatic programs.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The provided reviews highlight significant dissatisfaction across various YMCA services, primarily due to issues with staffing, inconsistent rule enforcement, and poor customer service. Concerns include inadequate supervision and safety in children's classes (e.g., 'Little Ninja' class with one teacher for 15 kids, leading to bullying and neglect of children), inflexible and unhelpful childcare policies (e.g., 'Kid Zone' staff calling parents prematurely without attempting to console children), and inconsistent application of gym rules (e.g., shoe policy) leading to members being unfairly removed. Furthermore, members reported persistent problems with membership management, including being charged for services while accounts were supposedly on hold, unfulfilled refund promises, and rigid cancellation policies (e.g., 30-day notice). Facility access was also a point of frustration due to inconvenient pool hours and unreliability. Several reviewers criticized management and staff as rude, incompetent, and unknowledgeable, contributing to a perceived lack of value for money and a desire to seek alternative fitness facilities.

Don’t bother waisting your time and money with the little ninja class. Your kid learns nothing, not even basic tumbling or how to use the equipment/run the corses right. There’s usually just one “teacher” that can’t possibly pay attention to the 15 kids in the class. Most of the time it’s just a free for all. I had to pull my kid out of the class today because a couple of the kids kept pinching my kids face while they were in line for an activity. He’s got marks and scratches on his face. The teacher did nothing to stop them or paid attention to it. The mother of the other child refused to do anything to make her kid stop so I had to remove my kid from the class early. I get this is a class parents put their kids in to burn off energy, and my kid can definitely be a wild child too, but most of the parents just dump their kids in there and don’t pay attention. I don’t expect the kids not to play with each other but I think at $90 a month my kid should be kept safe at least. Another mom had to ask a teacher to help her son who was on the verge of tears during class while he attempted to do a summersault on their own. Again the “teacher” didn’t notice or try to help that kid either. I think this Y makes more than enough money to have two teachers at all kid classes to avoid these issues and actually instruct the kids. I’ll be looking for a different more responsible gym next summer.
Kid Zone is a two hour limit right? I'm never longer than an hour, but tell me why they call me at one hour on the DOT. Because my four month old is "tired". They're tired. Bounce them to sleep? I picked the baby up and they weren't even crying. They should also watch how they talk in front of parents, because it definitely shows that they don't even try to console the kids. A child started crying and one of the girls said "just call his mom". No attempt to distract and redirect him. Just sucks that I can't even get a full workout in when my kid isn't even a fussy kid.
Unfortunately I am having to leave a review as today is my final visit at this ymca location. I’ve been coming to this location for about 4 years now on and off, I recently got into my own business and stopped coming here for about a year. About 2 weeks ago I came back to this ymca thrilled to get myself back to my peak physique and I have had numerous issues with the staff and rules here. They had a problem with me wearing my slides at first which was understandable, you don’t want a weight dropping on your toes or anything of the sort. I was told by every single staff member that my shoe had to be a closed toe shoe, meaning that it covers and protects all of my toes and majority of the top of my foot in case something were to fall on it. I recently purchased some Ugg boots for the comfort they provided me when lifting, these shoes cover all of my toes and my entire foot. I’ve been lifting and training in them for about a week and nobody had said a thing until tonight I was kicked out of the gym in the middle of my workout for wearing the shoes. Again, I don’t have a problem with rules or following them, just explain them to your customers the correct way. Honestly this ymca isn’t a real gym anyways I don’t know what I was expecting coming from a mixed martial arts gym back to the ymca, majority of the staff knows nothing about the equipment or training in general lol. To whoever runs the place, make sure rules are said and established properly, I also wouldn’t have uneducated elderly people in the weight room or as my employees period in a gym.
We are just done with the YMCA, and at this point doubt we will retry them, let alone recommend them. We hardly ever used the facilities during the year, besides the pool in the summer. (We did attempt the pool during the school year but the hours hardly ever worked for our family) So we paid throughout the year for something we didn't use, which at first was fine. The option was there I guess. But then for the one thing we used it for, summer swimming, it slowly got worse over the last few years. Ridiculously long wait times for the outdoor pool and again rough times for the indoor pool hours (though it was better than school year hours). Then last year I was pregnant with my fourth, and would literally call ahead to confirm the indoor pool’s hours, before making the drive from Winfield. I just wanted to stay cool with being pregnant and have an easier time containing three other children last summer. However pretty much every time, after again calling ahead to double check times, the facilities were not available. So because I had kids excited for the pool, I had to then wait in a long line for an outdoor pool, I didn't want to originally even use… We also have had issues with them charging us when we placed our account on hold. Again last year I was pregnant, so to save money for our family of six, I asked to put the account on hold throughout the school year. As we never really used it besides summer. They told me I'd have to re-pause it in a couple months. Due to my pregnancy they put in special notes that I could call it in, instead of going in person. (As I’d I have a 2 month old by then). Low and behold they charged me, and when they looked back at the notes claimed that I had the wrong date. I literally put it on my phone calendar in front of the associate when I talked to her, and read it back to her. The difference between their notes and my calendar note to call them, was exactly one month apart. Fishy right. They claimed they'd take care of a refund and re-pause it. They never did. I only just recently found out, that they've been charging us ever since December. The refund I thought I saw hit my bank never went through, and every time I looked at my statements they were lucky it was buried by other bills. So I go in to at least stop the last month and future charges, and I'm told they can't do anything without 30 days notice. So I'm supposedly going to be charged next month, and then they'll cancel it. We are now just cancelling the card. From experience due to the pandemic, we know they'll charge us until we restart our card again. As they told us back then, we had to pay all the back payments during COVID (when we never went). All because our visa card expired and we never updated the card on file, due to you know COVID and not using the place. We've let so much slide… and wasted so much money on the idea we'd go and or believing we had it paused. But this was the last straw. So yeah two stars, only because I loved the swim class we used for my oldest and before it went downhill we did love using the pool facilities.
Management is rude and incompentent. Driving over an hour to use this facility we arrived with a juvenile guest and they would not allow us to use the facility. My juvenile guest has visited other YMCA facilities prior having already had their parent fill in and sign the necessary paperwork to visit the facilities. All that was necessary was for the management to call or e-mail any one of the other facilities and have them acknowledge the signed paperwork and/or have them send it to them via e-mail or fax. Instead the manager insisted that the juvenile have a parent with them. The manager stating that this is their policy. Having been a member of YMCA for twenty years and being an owner of a Health Club for thirty years I found the manager rude and repeating his policy with a smerk and grin. There was absolutely no reason for this facility to not allow us access. There is a pattern with the YMCA organization in hiring incompetent and untrained managers within the organization most likely due to their non-profit status and hiring friends and relatives to do a job that they are not qualified to perform. Treating a paying member with such callous is an insult and a slap in the face to all members. Fire the jerk and hire a person who understands the importance of loyalty and respect.
