The Hammond Family YMCA, located at 6532 Indianapolis Blvd, Hammond, IN, is a community-focused facility offering a wide range of programs and amenities for all ages. It typically includes a fitness center, gymnasium, indoor pool, group exercise studios, and childcare services, aiming to promote healthy living and community engagement within the Hammond area.

What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews present a mixed but predominantly negative picture of the facility. Positive aspects highlighted include updated and numerous equipment, a nice turf area and recovery room, clean lockers with good lighting, and an initially clean facility. However, many reviewers express significant dissatisfaction. Common complaints include persistent maintenance issues, particularly with the hot tub (often lukewarm, broken jets) and other machines. Pool access is severely limited, with the activity and kiddie pools frequently closed due to understaffing, and the lap pool experiencing intermittent closures, with no corresponding membership discounts. The facility is described as incredibly crowded, with a lack of staff enforcement regarding equipment etiquette (e.g., weights not being re-racked). Privacy concerns arise from members filming in locker rooms and workout areas. Management is frequently criticized as 'horrible,' especially regarding personal training (difficulties with trainer selection, focus on long-term sales, long delays, unqualified trainers) and an arduous process for membership cancellation and refunds. Staff interactions are also described as negative during billing issues. While the membership price is considered good, many feel it's not worth it due to the decline in upkeep and service quality since the facility's opening, leading some to cancel or consider other options.

I been going to the YMCA in Schererville but wanted to give this place a try finally. Soooooo nice, the updated equipment is amazing. Yes it gets picked but doesn't feel that crowded because they have so many machines and duplicates of different stuff. I like the turf area and then the recovery room also. Their pool area is really nice, I can see that it might get overwhelming with all the kids but i did go during summer break. Their lockers have the best lighting, and super clean. It's been open for almost a year I think so glad they are keeping it clean. I need to check out what other stuff they have.

The ymca is nice and renovated don’t get me wrong but they do have a lot of problems they need to fix a lot such as the HOT TUB at times it is not hot at all it feels more lukewarm like bath water instead of a actual hot tub and the Jets have not been working for weeks now at random times throughout the day it is shut down because it is not working properly. The Activity pool is almost never open due to them not having enough staff so please don’t follow the schedule on the paper because it is rarely open the lap pool does tend to stay open but then it closes for about a hour at a time every other hour or so but the kiddie pool for the little ones and the activity pool is rarely open no discount on memebership due to not having all the things included in the membership OPEN instead it’s a sign saying sorry closed right now and a half excuse. Also almost everyone here has their cameras out in the locker room or tripods out while working out recording the facility so if you are a shy person or a introvert please make sure your watching your surrounding.

At this point your YMCA is the same as planet fitness. Machines are broke the hit tub hasn't worked in a week. I canceled but your policy is wait 30 days if done inside not online. So I continue to see if the facilities are working before my membership ends and nope.

The management there is horrible. I signed up for a three class option for $99 with a personal trainer. I’ve just finished rehab and wanted to do some strength training and ensure I did not re-injure myself. I had to call multiple times to have anyone call me back. After multiple calls, I finally got a trainer to email me. The very first thing they asked was if I was planning to use a trainer long-term. With that said to me was they were only interested in their own self monetization and not me at all. They do not have a list of trainers or their backgrounds or classifications available for you to view and choice. They tell you they’re going to pick the trainer best for you. This process took several months I wound up with a 19 year-old nutritionist. He was very nice and informed me that there were other trainers that dealt with rehab with more experience than he possessed. So after six months of going back-and-forth with this, I decided to cancel my membership altogether. Now I got the runaround about getting the refund for the $99. I visited the facility physically twice and called nearly a half dozen times. I also emailed and have yet to receive any response. So I had no choice but to file a grievance with the credit card company for a refund. End of story, I did re-injure myself and haven’t been able to work out, this was the secondary reason why I cancelled my membership there.

The facility was beautiful when it first opened but now I would not recommend this place. I almost exclusively lift weights and I have for years. I miss the old facility. The equipment is great but they don't take care of it. They don't enforce keeping bumper plates on the squat racks and normal weights in their place. I know it seems like a petty gripe but personally I have no idea why anyone would swap these, maybe they like the colors but its a mess. Dumbbells get moved and never put back in the proper location. The number is right there it shouldn't be so hard. It gets incredibly crowded which is annoying and I understand they have to get members but there is absolutely no accountability. The one time I interacted with staff I did not like how I was treated. I had a billing issue and took care of it immediately. My info was stolen and I had to get a new bank card. What could have been a simple look up turned into 15 minutes of waiting and being looked at like I was trying to steal gym time. Normally I walk in head down and do what I went to do that day was very annoying. It is a shared space and shared equipment. The membership price is great but not worth it if there is no upkeep. Staff needs to enforce the rules and keep up with the equipment. People will not want to go there. I don't want to go to Planet Fitness, World Gym is long gone there really isn't another viable place for me to go to. I have a family membership here and would rather not have 2 memberships.
