What are people saying (AI review summary)? The Newton YMCA receives mixed reviews, showcasing both strong positive aspects and significant areas of concern. Many patrons highly value the facility for its diverse offerings, including aerobic classes, swimming, basketball, outdoor sports, and well-equipped workout areas, contributing to a healthy lifestyle. Specific staff members, such as aerobic instructor Deb Kelly, and the Early Learning Center staff are commended for their motivating, pleasant, and compassionate approach, with the Early Learning Center praised for its educational activities. However, serious criticisms are directed at the sports director for inappropriate behavior with young children (screaming, condescending tone, unclear directions) during T-ball, and for being rude and unhelpful to an adult parent. Additionally, a separate child care service is heavily criticized for being 'subpar,' citing issues with staff attitudes, excessive diaper usage leading to high costs, and children frequently returning home with bites and marks, suggesting a need for employee re-evaluation.

The sports director at this location should not be working with children. We are new to this town and have used the Y for many things. I’ve never had a poor experience until now. We signed our 5 year old up for T-ball. When we got there , there was the sports director and 2 couches. The couches were wonderful and interacted with the children in a way you would expect an adult to interact with 3,4, and 5 year olds. They were kind and encouraging. The sports director though, was screaming at the kids. His tone was condescending, he wasn’t giving clear directions and then yelling at the kids when they didn’t follow directions. These were toddlers. Anyone who is working with toddlers needs to have patience, understanding , and be kind. This was not the first time I had a poor encounter with the director of sports either. The first time he was rude and condescending to me during summer soccer, when my daughter’s coach quit. I had expressed concern about the lack of communication through that process. Instead of addressing that concern he was just rude. It’s one thing to be rude to an adult, but we a youth sports director you should know how to interact with children. Many of the parents at T-ball were commenting about the way he was speaking to the kids.
The Newton YMCA plays an important role in my healthy lifestyle! Weekly aerobic class workouts with Deb Kelly, who is always there and motivating along with the pool, track and weight room, balance out my workouts for a well-rounded fitness routine. The staff is pleasant and makes you feel welcome! We are fortunate to have this great facility! 🏃♀️🏊♀️🚴🏋️♂️
Great people...swimming basketball...outdoor sports...workout areas...walking area.... they have a wide variety of activities... exercising and classes of all kinds very nice place
The child care here is complete trash they only care about there greedy self's, time and time again I tried letting them know of the issues, they tend to reply with snarky attitudes and sny comments. They use to many diapers so I end up spending a fortune, sure their service such as what they teach and have is good but the care is super subpar. No idea how many times my daughter came home with bites from kids and marks. They need to fix this issue and I believe it's a employee/director issue they need to re hire.
I couldn't be happier with a place! I love their Early Learning Center so much! They do so many activities with the kids that are educational and all of the staff is so compassionate. The fitness classes are amazing and well taught. I couldn't think of a negative if I really tried. I love all of the things that they offer for the whole community as a great non-profit!
