You know how cilantro tastes like soap to some folks? Well, in a similar manner, Canal Park Lodge might smell like a locker room to certain folks…. I happen to be one of those folks, but don’t let that deter you. Plenty of people have slept here without the smell bothering them; and in the grand scheme of things, it’s not a deal breaker. Regardless, this place gets a full 5 stars from me for the following reason: - The breakfast was great! - The location is absolutely perfect - Pools and amenities are very nice - the hotel itself is very beautiful - and the hospitality is phenomenal. Diving into the last point - I did complain about the smell and the concierge quickly moved me into another room. Sadly, the smell was still there, but the room was nicer and had doors where we can open to air the room out more. Hence, five stars. The staff were so kind and so understanding. In this day and age, nothing beats caring, reliable hospitality.
Very clean hotel with excellent service. It's directly on Lake Superior and in Canal Park. We always stay here. Wouldn't choose anywhere else! We had a large group and they were extremely accommodating. Breakfast is included. Coffee is good. Plenty of spaces for a family to hang out in the various lobby areas. Views of the lake from inside on a cold day. And manager Becky is five stars too.
We had an incredible experience at this lodge. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm, welcoming, and attentive—every staff member went out of their way to make us feel at home. The room was beautifully designed, blending rustic charm with modern comfort. Thoughtful details and high-end finishes made it both cozy and luxurious. Waking up to views of Lake Superior right outside our window was unforgettable. The location is absolutely perfect—secluded enough to feel peaceful, but close to everything we needed. Whether you’re here for a relaxing getaway or outdoor adventure, this lodge is a gem. We can’t wait to come back.
I’m no stranger to visiting Duluth and have stayed at most hotels in canal park. This was the first I’ve stayed at Canal Park Lodge. I was there strictly for business and was in my room working 90% of the time. Staff were friendly upon check in, allowed me to check in an hour early, and my room was clean. However The odor in my room was nearly unbearable. What I am grateful for is the fact that it is summer, and that my hotel room had windows that I could open so while I worked in my room I could “attempt” to air it out. It’s hard to explain what it smelled like but it was similar to body odor. Because it was a Saturday I didn’t want to complain to the front desk because they were more than likely sold out of rooms as all the hotels were this weekend d and it was just me on this trip, so I decided to deal with it. But for the price I paid. Oofta did I pay for it. All of my belongings smell of this now as well. Upon checkout I let the employee know of the odor and that I had left the windows open. (I didn’t want housekeepers to miss this in case it rained) and the response was “shoot I’m sorry” I asked if this was a common odor on the 3rd floor and she ignored my question and said “mmm, well sorry about that” I would have pursued the conversation further but when that was the response I received I knew there was no point and to pay the $359 for the arm pit smelling room so I could get home to wash all of my things. I hope they do better moving forward. I’ve worked in the hospitality business for years and can think of a handful of different ways I would have responded to a guest with this concern. This seems like a great hotel however will not be staying there again.
Great location and views. Our room overlooked the lake and boardwalk. The pool is good sized, kept warm, and there's a hot tub that the kids enjoyed. The breakfast might be the best hotel breakfast I've ever had.
