The Kokomo Family YMCA, located at 114 N Union St, Kokomo, IN 46901, USA, is a community-focused facility offering a wide range of programs and amenities for all ages. It typically provides fitness areas, group exercise classes, sports leagues, and robust aquatics programs, serving as a hub for health, well-being, and community engagement in Kokomo.
The Kokomo Family YMCA maintains two distinct pools: a lap pool set at a comfortable 80 degrees Fahrenheit for exercise and swimming, and a warm water pool heated to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, ideal for therapy, lessons, and recreational use.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The YMCA elicits mixed reviews, with significant praise for its comprehensive facilities, including pools, tracks, and various courts, along with amenities like temperature control, convenient parking, and generally friendly staff. However, several critical issues are frequently raised. These include disruptive cleaning activities during peak workout hours, a highly criticized payment system with poor communication regarding failed payments and fees, and instances of unprofessional or arrogant behavior from specific trainers. Furthermore, the gym area itself often receives negative feedback for being 'dilapidated' with limited and unpoorly maintained equipment (e.g., cracked benches), and a perceived lack of patrons cleaning equipment, leading some members to prefer other gyms for better quality and value.

I like it here, just wish they didn’t clean around you when you are trying to work out. Don’t get me wrong I love how clean it is, but why can’t they clean when it’s closed?? I brought it to the front desk’s attention but once again they are cleaning the fitness room while people are trying to workout. It’s frustrating when you are trying to stretch and you have a machine in your face, not to mention everything after that gets wet and dirt starts sticking to you.
This place is awsome!!!! Run, exersize , swim all year long. No matter what the weather is. Nice people. Temperature controlled. 4 levels of parking. Elevators in the y and in parking. Tv's while working out. Large oval track on second floor overlooks pool. Every weight machine and free weights. Stair stepper.racket ball court. Basket ball court in basement. Great view all over. I got a free membership from my silver sneakers health insurance by humana.
I like it there but their payment system and communication freaking sucks. I would’ve stayed at planet fitness if I knew the communication was gonna be this bad. They don’t notify you at all if your card bounces it if the monthly payment doesn’t go through UNTIL you owe the extra fee for it bouncing. It wouldn’t be a problem and it would make sense IF THEY WOULD NOTIFY YOU INITIALLY AND NOT AFTER THE FACT. That’s greedy and annoying. I didn’t know if wasnt working. It’s not a problem on the money end, it’s a subscription! But their communication is awful. They only utilize the emails for newsletter—that’s it. They don’t email you about your balance or nothing, their main YMCA phone number (an 866 number or something out of state) doesn’t leave a voicemail—why would I return a random, out of state number? The phone etiquette sucks, their communication sucks, their usage of our email address sucks. So annoying.
I definitely don't recommend this gym, not because it's a YMCA (the gym equipment is great in my opinion) but because it's the only one where they let the one trainer /instructor treat women badly. I had never experienced so much entitlement and arrogance from a trainer, that he snatched a workout bench while my belongings were on and near it from my place, kicking us out from the area. In the absence of my husband stepping away for a minute, the trainer told me that his class would start in 5 minutes, a class I wasn’t participating, and didn't give me a chance to move my things in that time frame, and took the bench we were using. We confronted him and talk to management, but the trainer didn’t even apologize after he accepted what he should’ve done, which by the way his name is Rodney
I recently moved my gym membership back to Planet Fitness. I was frankly very surprised at the YMCA. Although the janitorial staff was excellent and always cleaning around the place, the exercise equipment was not cleaned after use by the majority of its patrons. You expect in such a large facility, there would be plenty of equipment, but as regards weight, you could say there was about one or two of everything. The coverings on the weight benches were cracked and so if you did go to wipe them down, you were just wiping the exposed foam. You would think by the way the "Y" looks on the outside, it wouldnt be so, well Im going to use the word dilapidated in the gym area. Yes, all the staff were nice, however the facilities were 2nd rate, I will take Planet Fitness any day over this place, cleaner and better facilities overall. And much cheaper. If you like pool, raquetball..etc the whole package, Y offers that, but their gym area is trash and lacking in equipment. Nasty really, and Im not a germophobe.
