Military-friendly destination for open swimming, lap swimming and family fun with a playground.
Specific historical records detailing the precise operating temperatures of the pool(s) at the Aviation Cadet Pool, Building 89 Ash Street, Montgomery, AL, are not publicly available. As a standard institutional swimming facility, it would have likely been maintained at a comfortable temperature for training and recreation, typically within a range similar to 78-82°F (25-28°C).
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The pool receives mixed reviews, generally praised for its large size, open swim area, and amenities suitable for families, including a splash pad, water playground, and water slides. It also features lap swimming lanes and can be uncrowded. However, significant criticisms focus on its operational aspects: hours are frequently shortened and deemed 'horribly restrictive,' making it inconvenient for families (e.g., no kids before 1 PM) and lap swimmers (midday only, too warm). The daily cost of $5 per person is considered expensive, particularly for families, and season passes are impractical for military members who relocate often. A major concern is the perceived lack of professional lifeguard supervision, with reports of lifeguards 'goofing off' leading to parts of the pool being closed. Other issues include inconsistent information on facilities (like a climbing wall), suggestions for improved water cleanliness and cooler lap swimming temperatures, and poor communication about schedule changes.
Reviews
They keep shortening the hours, seemingly in response to having few life guards available. Saturday, Aug 31, they had half the pool (deep end) closed, with only two life guards in seats, one at the shallow end, one by the slides. And then there were 6 (!) other life guards hanging out in their little office, eating at the tables, flirting and wrestling with a female lifeguard in the pool, and generally just hanging out while I presume being paid. Disappointing to see the hours shortened and half the pool closed for military members and their families when the life guards are just a bunch of teenagers goofing off anyway, with seemingly no adult supervision. Also looking at older reviews, there is no longer a climbing wall, and only one basketball hoop.
Great place for kids and teens. There are three lap swimming lanes that stay open. For teens thee are basketball hoops and a rock wall. For smaller kids there is a water slide contraption that is popular. For the little ones there is a water playground. Went on a Saturday and it was surprisingly not crowded. Take the family and enjoy the sun!
Good large pool. Splash pad for kids. 4 stars for horribly restrictive hours, and costing $5/person/day. You can't take a kid until after 1pm, and a visit costs $25 for a family with three kids. Season passes are good, but with people in school the moves occur in the summer (one year of swim would require 2 season passes).
Size of open swim area is great. Water cleanliness is ok, but could be much better. Pool temp is too warm for lap swimming and only open midday (too hot to do any extended lap swimming). Recommend opening 6-8a for laps. And reopen at 11 or 12 for general. Just a suggestion.
Pretty fun pool. They didn't warn us that they were switching to lap swim in 30 minutes so they gave us tickets to come back later. We wish they had warned us sooner because we were both moving the next day so it was our last time hanging out. When we came back later that day we had a fun time though
