About

Indoor public pool featuring a diving board, plus a sauna and a hot tub.

The main lap pool is generally maintained at 81-82°F (27-28°C). The warm pool is kept at a higher temperature, typically 88-90°F (31-32°C). The hot tub is heated to approximately 102°F (39°C).

What are people saying (AI review summary)? Reviews for the North Whidbey Pool / John Vanderzicht Pool present a mixed picture. Positives include clean facilities, amenities like a hot tub, sauna, slide, and rope swing, and some staff being described as friendly and helpful. Swim lessons are also available. However, there are significant negative experiences reported. One serious incident describes a patron nearly drowning due to apparent lifeguard inattention, followed by a lifeguard being rude to the rescuer. Other patrons complain about lifeguards being overly strict, subjective in rule enforcement, and generally 'killing the mood'. A birthday party host reported issues with scheduling and setup, a dirty room, rude behavior from multiple staff members (including front desk, custodian, and a specific lifeguard), and a lack of follow-up from management regarding their complaint. An official comment from a Commissioner emphasizes the lifeguards are well-trained, video surveillance is frequent, and personal responsibility is key, noting rules exist for safety and swim lessons are offered.

The North Whidbey Pool, Park & Recreation District / John Vanderzicht Pool lifeguards are well trained and do exactly what they are supposed to. Video surveillance is reviewed frequently throughout the day and after every suspected, reported or accused incident to review performance. We all have a responsibility to make good and educated decisions. If you can't swim, it's not a good decision to go down the slide in the deep end of the pool. It puts yourself, the lifeguards, and all other patrons in unnecessary danger. When you don't follow the rules, the lifeguards and staff will instruct you of the infraction. That is their job. When you put yourself in a dangerous situation, it is not a good decision to place blame on someone else for poor decision making on your part. Lifeguards are responsible for over 100 people, and when people knowingly exceed their abilities, it puts all other patrons in danger. The staff is dedicated to protecting even the people who refuse to protect themselves from themselves. Swim lessons for children and adults (both group and private) are available for those who wish to improve their skills. Contact the pool for details or check out the website to sign up. This comment is representative of my own words, and not and official response from the staff, the organization or the Board of Commissioners. - David Guy - NWPPRD Commissioner, Position 5

I don’t want to be that person that trashes a business but I feel this review is extremely necessary after what happened today and I think parents should be aware especially if they are bringing their kids here to swim. I want to thank one of the managers that was so kind and listened to my friends situation. Me and my friend went on the water slide, I went first and then she went after me. She goes after me and as soon as she hits the water she is struggling to pull herself back up and starts to drown. I started to realize what was happening so I immediately started swimming towards her to help her. I finally get to her and I’m trying to keep her afloat, while also struggling to keep myself afloat too. I look over and see two lifeguards infront of us, just strolling down the pool, my friend was clearly in panic, making signs she was drowning. We finally get to the rope that separates us from a different part of the pool, and a young lady comes up to us and yells at us for holding onto it, I can’t even respond because I’m coughing on water trying to make sure my friend is safe. Then I try to proceed to leave and swim right under the slide so I’m not in the way of people that are coming out of it. I get yelled at again by the same person to move and not be in the way. Im sorry but did you just see anything that happened?? I get your trying to do your job but I pretty much just did your job for you. Luckily my years and years of swimming lessons came to good use. There’s no need to be on such a power trip over some rope and trying to exit the pool. Please do better, rehire people that actually pay attention at work instead of twirling their thumbs… you could save a life.

The pool in Oak Harbor is a great place to relax! I am teaching my grandson swimming this summer! The facilities are clean and there is a hot tub and sauna. The pool has a slide and a rope swing with a ball! The staff is friendly and helpful!

New lifeguards killed the mood. I get following and enforcing the rules but lighten up cause you’re doing too much. Lowered to 2 stars knowing the lifeguards are entirely subjective in their “rule” enforcement. Do better.

KIDS BIRTHDAY PARTY I hosted my daughter’s 2nd birthday party here, rented out the entire place..paid $350 for a 4:00-5:30pm party. When I booked and PAID I was told I can start setting up at 3:30 so my party will start at 4. I went to set up at 3:30 and the front desk girl told me she is letting the previous party stay in the room until 3:45 then I can set up and will have the pool from 4:00-5:45pm..cool. Whatever, I let it go. I asked the front desk staff if I could use the cleaning products on the custodians cart that was sitting right infront of the room, She told me no but she can go get him. By this time it’s 4:05 and the custodian still hasn’t come to clean so I had no choice but to set up in a dirty room. He finally came at 4:10. At 5:45, they shut all the lights off except the ones in the party room. The custodian and the lifeguard in all black stood at the door and watched all of my guests walk out with attitudes on their faces. If I would’ve been able to set up at the time I was told; my guests would’ve been gone by 5:30 and the custodian and the lifeguard in all black could’ve left at 5:45. The lifeguard that wears all black, I believe she could be head life guard because everytime myself or a guest had a question they would all run to get her— was rude to me and every guest that needed help. My husband is a very easy going guy and even he said he couldn’t believe the way we were treated. I wasn’t going to post a review here because I sent an email to both emails on the website. Julie Millang who is the Business Manager as per her email signature, emailed me back and told me she would reach back out in a few days after she spoke with staff that worked my party, but it’s now almost been a month and I still haven’t heard a word. I don’t believe in trashing businesses online, and I never once asked for a penny back of the $350 I paid. But I was atleast hoping for a response back after she said she would speak with the staff that worked our birthday party and get back to me. I know if someone was giving me $350.00 worth of business I would do everything in my power to try and keep that customer. We were treated as if we were inconveniencing them by being there but they were tolerating us for the money. I even apologized to one of the male lifeguards for i don’t even know what. I was generous and gave this business a 2 star because my daughter enjoyed herself.
