The YMCA of Middletown, NY, located at 81 Highland Ave, is a long-standing community institution dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. It offers a comprehensive range of facilities and programs, including a fitness center, group exercise studios, gymnasium, indoor track, and an aquatic center. Programs cater to all ages, encompassing swim lessons, fitness classes, youth sports, summer camps, childcare, and senior programs, aiming to improve the quality of life for its members and the wider community.
The YMCA of Middletown's Aquatic Center features a Lap Pool, primarily for fitness swimming and lap lane activities, and a Warm Water Teaching Pool, ideal for swim lessons, water exercise, and therapeutic purposes. While specific current temperatures are not publicly listed on their website, these different pool types are typically maintained at distinct temperatures to suit their respective functions, with the warm water pool generally being significantly warmer than the lap pool.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The YMCA receives mixed reviews, highlighting both strengths and significant areas for improvement. Positives include a convenient location for some users, a well-maintained spa, and good availability of treadmills and weight training equipment. Some praise the front desk staff for being friendly and helpful, and instructors are generally well-regarded. However, major issues consistently arise, particularly concerning the pool, which is frequently described as extremely cold (reportedly as low as 59 degrees) and sometimes out of service, leading to member dissatisfaction. Other complaints include older, rusted, or frequently broken equipment (such as machines downstairs, the sauna, and bathrooms), a lack of classes on Mondays and Fridays, and poorly maintained basketballs. A significant concern is raised about extremely rude and unhelpful front desk staff in one instance, causing a very negative experience for a potential member.

I tried the YMCA due to the facts it has everything but unfortunately the pool is like a ice plunge 🧊 I don't understand why the pool is so cold ! My son refused to go to swimming classes because the water was so cold I asked the front desk is there any way the pool can be warmer " completely ignored! I brought my own thermostat it said 59 degrees! Not cool at all , now I know why this place is losing money no one wants to get into a cold pool , I'm not paying for membership to not be able enjoy the swimming pool . Very Unfortunate
Nice YMCA. They have a well maintained spa in the locker room. Weights and cardio have two levels, upper is more chill while lower is good for flexing. They have a pool and a boxing room (make sure to bring gloves). Basketballs need better maintenance though; bring an air pump or your own ball. Overall, a nice YMCA in Middletown.
I love the YMCA because it’s convenient for me in the morning, but now there are no classes on Mondays and Fridays. They also need new machines for downstairs since some of the equipment is rusted, and things are often not working—for example, one machine, the sauna, pool, or bathroom. There’s always something. On the positive side, I love the front desk staff—they’re very friendly. The instructors are awesome. In my opinion, the room downstairs with the TV could be improved by removing the red machines and replacing them with equipment that people will actually use.
I used the fitness room while on vacation. This YMCA has a great facility - I could always find an open treadmill and I could work on my weight training easily. The folks at the front desk were the best. Even when my nationwide membership was difficult to access, these ladies made sure I could work out. The people that work here are so lovely.
I was very interested in signing up for a gym membership with swim lessons for my children. I read the info provided in the pamphlet, but still had additional questions that were not listed. When I approached the help desk, I was not acknowledged. The 3 woman who sat behind the counter completely ignored me. I said can someone please help me? I have a few questions. I was immediately cut off by the one woman who said “GO TAKE A PAPER AND READ! I said I did read it, but I have further questions. she kept pointing at the pamphlets and saying READ IT READ IT!! EVERYTHING YOU NEED IN IN THE PAMPHLET! I was shocked and embarrassed with how I was treated by staff. I can't speak about the programs themselves, only the unbelievably rude staff at the help desk. It’s outrageous that’s how they treat potential customers. I now make sure I tell everyone about my experience. In doing so I have also heard from others who shared similar experiences with the YMCA staff. I was not rude or demanding to receive such treatment. I work in the public myself and would NEVER speak to customers in that way. Extremely unprofessional!! I will never go back. I would give 0 stars if I could.
