Clean, airy gym offering classes and equipment, plus track and basketball court.
The Currituck Family YMCA features beautiful indoor pools for various aquatic programs and recreational use. While specific pool temperatures are not explicitly published, YMCA pools are typically heated and maintained at comfortable temperatures, generally ranging from 80-84°F (26-29°C) for lap and recreational swimming, to ensure an enjoyable experience year-round.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews for the YMCA present a mixed but largely positive picture. Many members highly commend the friendly, caring, and helpful staff, especially within the 'Stay and Play' and general daycare services, which are frequently described as excellent and a 'game changer' for parents. The gym itself is praised for being well-handled, clean, having good equipment availability, an indoor track, and an outdoor pool. New members appreciate the welcoming atmosphere and personalized guidance from staff like Rick. However, some criticisms include the pricing, occasional inconvenience due to swimming programs occupying the indoor pool, and the daycare closing certain play areas. A significant negative outlier is the summer camp program, which received a strong discouragement due to severe safety and supervision concerns, including a lack of headcount protocol, children being left unattended, and counselors allegedly screaming at participants, leading to the perception that the camps are run solely for monetary gain rather than child enrichment.

Can’t say enough good things about the stay and play staff!! They are so great with kids. I was nervous about leaving my baby at first but they took such good care of him, I feel completely comfortable leaving him in their care while I work out. My toddler is often apprehensive about going but they always work with him and help him feel loved and cared for. It has been such a game changer for me to know my children have top notch care while I take a couple hours to work on myself.
Friendly caring staff clean environment truly puts the customer first -Charlie
Far as gyms go this YMCA is very well handled. The y could work on their pricing but I knew that joining. Both the staff and members are good people and it shows in the cleanliness. An indoor track is great the outdoor pool is nice in the summer. Generally not a wait to get a bench or the machine you want. A lot of swimming programs take up the indoor pool or other parts from time to time, which I don't see as fair to full price members. The daycare part closes the big play house area from time to time, don't really get that or how to explain it to a 7 year old that she should just draw. But overall it is a great place that of course could improve. Ps. saunas are supposed to be hot
I cannot say enough amazing things about the YMCA in Barco NC. I am 36 and have never gone to a gym because quite frankly I was too intimated by them. I never thought I could be someone who went to work out every day. I met with Rick there who was great and very friendly. He showed me how to use all the equipment and set up a workout routine for me. I have already taken a few classes and the instructors have been fantastic. I already feel like this is a home away from home. The daycare is wonderful as well. My daughter and I love Ms. Courtney and see her there all the time. Joining this Y is by far the best decision we've made since moving here from Upstate NY a few months ago.
I would highly discourage you from sending your child to the YMCA Summer Camp programs. Unforrtunalty, they are running these camps solely for monetary gain. These camps are not designed to enrich your childs life, or create exciting memories. It's an extremely poor reflection of our Currituck County YMCA. My daughter only attended two days of the camp once we realized they had no rooster or head count protocol. The second day upon calling we realized they didn't have any record that she was in their care. Terrifying. To top it off my daughter was in tears about being screamed at all day by her teenage camp counselor. Her group was left under a tree for an hour, unattended, while the counselors practiced cheerleading. It's unacceptable that we all spent countless hours trying to satisfy the paperwork requirements and our hard earned money for our children to have bad experiences but most of all, not be safe.
