The South Shore YMCA, located at 3939 Richmond Ave, Staten Island, NY, is a community hub offering a wide range of programs and facilities. It features a modern fitness center, diverse group exercise classes, aquatics facilities with multiple pools, various youth sports and summer camps, and community events, all designed to promote health, wellness, and community engagement for all ages.
The facility typically maintains its Lap Pool at approximately 80-82°F (26.7-27.8°C) for recreational and fitness swimming. Additionally, a warmer Program/Teaching/Therapy Pool is usually kept around 88-90°F (31.1-32.2°C), ideal for lessons, therapy, and family activities.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? Reviews for the YMCA show a mixed experience. Positive feedback highlights the cleanliness of the facility, locker rooms, and bathrooms, as well as the friendly and helpful nature of trainers (with Laura specifically mentioned) and front desk staff. However, significant concerns were raised regarding several issues: an outdated and inflexible membership cancellation process that led to members being charged for unused services; safety concerns including a reported stabbing incident in the lobby and individuals loitering and smoking marijuana in the rear parking lot; issues with member conduct, specifically older members harassing children in the swimming lanes; and maintenance problems like broken sauna wood and mold in the pool. Some experiences also noted rude lifeguards and cold front desk staff, contrasting with the positive mentions.

I love the ymca, the trainers are always very nice and helpful, if anyone need any assistance I recommend Laura, such a great person to talk to and so helpful and thorough, I’m sure the others are too, the place, the locker room and bathrooms are always clean. The people at the front desk by the entrance are also very nice and friendly, I have not tried other programs or classes just the gym but hopefully I will in the near future, have a blessed day everyone everyday, glad to be part of the YMCA. ❤️👍👏
Please update your cancellation process. It's not 1990 anymore. I was able to do the membership in person and asked them that it would be just for 1 month because we would leave after 4 weeks. They told me they couldn't accept a cancellation on the same day o_O and that I had to do it at least the day after. I tried to do it online the day after, but that was not an option, sadly. When I was able to go there in person, I filled out the cancellation form, but it was too late at that point. I will now have to pay 1 full month for my daughter's membership, without using a day of it, because we'll be on vacation for 2 months. You guys just lost 3 members at once.
Some old people took the lane as their own and are harrassing kids from swimming in it. Every Single Time my kids swim, one or two old people came saying we have to leave that it's Y's policy blablabla, we have to get help from staff to let them know we can swim here, and guess what they gave my kids eyeballs, so disgusting! The experience is so bad that it feels they occupied this place and trying to chase away others so they can enjoy it as their own backyard! We might leave for this nonsense.
Young adult men loitering in rear parking lot in corner. Black BMW race car one guy was smoking marijuana while talking with someone with similar car. I was approaching my vehicle after finishing up my workout. Not the first time people loitering in same rear parking lot. Smelling second hand marijuana smoke is unhealthy..I don't feel safe parking in the rear parking lot .
I found out that someone was stabbed in the lobby of this YMCA and immediately called them to cancel my membership. Was told I needed to go in person to fill out a form which I did. The woman at the desk told me she couldn't see why they wouldn't make an exception to cancel my membership due to the reason for my cancellation but my husband got a call the next day saying they were not able to cancel the auto payment for this month. We had many issues before this as well and overall I would definitely not recommend this facility to anyone. The YMCA is supposed to be a family friendly and safe space for all but that was not my experience at this location whatsoever. The lifeguards were rude, the front desk staff was cold and wood was broken in the sauna that was left unfixed. The pool has mold growing around the side of it as well. Take your money somewhere else !
