What are people saying (AI review summary)? While the YMCA offers nice facilities including good equipment, basketball and racquetball courts, multiple pools, a steam room, and a sauna, several members express significant dissatisfaction. Common complaints revolve around the poor cleanliness of the basic locker rooms, which some suggest is to encourage a paid upgrade, and the lack of accountability for lost items. Many members feel the YMCA is focused on extracting more money rather than providing value. Staff are frequently described as rude, indifferent, and slow to address maintenance issues such as cold pool water, hot/cold water problems, overflowing toilets, and general locker room cleanliness. Additionally, trainer schedules are inconvenient for many, and staff communication regarding policies has been criticized for being handled poorly and publicly.

*** First: if you lose something in the locker room, it will be gone forever, either thrown out or taken by the housekeeping staff. *** The facilities themselves are OK, but the YMCA seems more concerned these days extracting more and more money from its membership base than providing value for the money. The biggest example: there are two tiers for the locker room: basic and the paid upgrade ($15 extra). I get that gym locker rooms are gross as a rule, but the basic locker room is usually pretty nasty. There’s usually trash left behind by one of the kids swim teams. The kids also love to just leave the showers running as well wasting water. Maybe you’re cool with that, but I’m not. Perhaps the point of keeping the locker room deliberately dirty is to make you purchase the upgrade? Check out the photos and judge for yourself.
No trainers to schedule at times one can actually attend. Expect you to take off work to suit trainers' schedules, much like doctors's appointments. They're probably great if you go to the gym Mon - Fri / 9am - 3pm.
The facility has nice equipment in two separate public gyms, one private for personql training. Basketball courts, racketball courts, multiple swimming pools, steam room and sauna. After going nearly everyday for about 6 months it's noticeable how rude and indifferent the staff are to a regular. It starts from top down. Issues with hot/cold water, toilets overflowing and locker room cleanlieness don't seem to be addressed with urgency. Would love to feel more welcomed at my local community gym.
The pool A( lap pool) water is too cold. Chilly is OK..cold is not. The temperature has been nice up to March 2025..Several swimmers agree the cold water affects their their joints and muscles. Raising the temperature would be appreciated.
I usually enjoy working out at the Westshore YMCA and have never had an issue working out in just my socks. However, during a recent visit, a younger staff member approached me while I was working out and, in front of others, told me to put my shoes back on. While I was completely compliant and respectful, I didn’t appreciate the tone or the way it was handled—it felt unnecessary to call attention to it publicly. If it’s a policy, I completely understand, especially for safety and cleanliness reasons. But there’s always a better way to approach people, and this interaction definitely left a bad taste.
