What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews for the YMCA present a mixed but ultimately concerning picture, particularly regarding its summer camp programs. Many members highly praise the Western Y, describing it as a supportive 'home away from home' with helpful, encouraging staff who genuinely care about personal health goals. The Les Mills fitness classes are frequently highlighted for their variety and flexible scheduling, and the facility is lauded for creating an environment where families can stay healthy together, especially through engaging children's activities like pickleball and volleyball with fun and skilled instructors. The availability of a great variety of workout equipment is also noted. However, significant and widespread dissatisfaction is reported concerning the summer camps. Common complaints include a severe lack of detailed communication and agendas for parents, unprofessional and unenthusiastic camp counselors who were often uninformed and unhelpful. Multiple accounts detail instances of bullying among campers that were not adequately addressed by staff, and a critical incident involved a young child not being shown the bathroom, leading to an accident. Parents also experienced issues with a dysfunctional communication app and an overall lack of supervision and engagement for children. A major point of contention was a camp being abruptly cancelled two weeks early due to staffing issues, causing significant childcare disruption for families, particularly single working parents, with inadequate solutions offered. Additionally, facility maintenance issues such as a lack of sanitary wipes and a faulty water fountain filter were mentioned. Some reviews suggest that recent management changes may have contributed to a 'bad summer' for the camps, with the overall experience deemed appalling given the high weekly cost.

The western y is my home away from home. The staff are always so helpful and encouraging, and really care about your personal health goals. I'm obsessed with the Les Mills fitness classes this location has to offer. So many time slots available on any day, which really is nice for me with an evening class preference. I spend almost every day here at the western y, and not because of fitness goals... the y is my escape and time with people I made great connections with. I'm only scratching the surface of all the lovely programs and activities the y has to offer... check them out for yourself! Tell them Nicole sent ya!
YMCA provides an environment to be healthy together as a family. Getting a child to workout is not always an easy task. But, getting a child to try something new like pickleball or volleyball is much easier. My daughter takes both pickleball and volleyball and loves it. The instructors are key because they make it fun while teaching her foundational skills. The best part is she wants to practice with me before class. There is no better way to spend quality time with your child by doing something fun and staying healthy at the same time. It's something they will always remember, and the The YMCA created an environment for that!
They have a great variety of workout equipment, but there aren't any sanitary wipes in the fitness center, plus one of the filters in the water fountain is bad.
Most disappointing camp. I was excited for my 6 year old son t attend 1 week at the Y being the week for superheroes theme. It was an awful week for him. I only received a blanket email the Sunday prior to the week with no detailed instructions or agenda for camp. The first day when we dropped him off Monday morning the "camp counselor" who stood in the car line with a tablet had no idea what the week entailed or any agenda. There were no camp counselor feels or excitement for my nervous son joining a huge camp ground with numerous aged kids. My son was bullied that day and a key-chain taken from his water bottle. Another camper helped him retrieve it back - not a counselor. He said kids were mean and smashing juice containers all day. The next day same sort of drop off with no happy greeting or activities explained for the day. My son was not encourage to participate or swim either days. He forgot his water bottle that day and the "camp counselors" are unable to help him find it. He said he sat alone and played in the dirt. Third day he comes home with wet clothes stating he peed his pants. My son is 6 years old and has not peed his pants in years. He said no one showed him where the bathroom was. This is disgusting and has been reported to the camp director with no response. We didn't take him Thursday because of how upset we all were. I took him Friday (the last day) to see if there is an actual superhero theme and the pick up lady says it has been a bad summer and the change in management has had an impact on the camp. Also, there are better camps out there including other camp locations. The Procare app they use did not entail any messages, pictures, or the ability to message anyone. Apparently kids were able to wear their favorite superhero costumes Friday which I was never informed of. It seemed like a badly controlled daycare. This is appalling for the YMCA to be so terrible at a cost of $400 per week.
This review pertains specifically to the camp at western. I am very disappointed with my experience at YMCA Camp Wassaqui this summer. From the start, I had serious concerns with staff professionalism. There were times when staff were cussing around the kids, and communication with parents was poor. Bullying was also a concern, and when brought up, no real action was taken to address it. On top of that, I was informed the night before that due to staffing issues, camp would be ending two weeks early. The program was supposed to last until August 25th, and parents depend on this childcare for the full summer. As a single working mom, this left me scrambling with no plan for the last two weeks before school starts. Instead of offering a real solution, I was only offered a free month of membership. I had to ask if there was another location, and now my son has to switch camps at the very end of summer losing the friendships and comfort he built here. This was handled very poorly and showed a lack of regard for families who trusted and depended on this camp. I will not be sending my son back next year.
