The Shaw JCC, located at 750 White Pond Dr, Akron, OH, is a comprehensive community center offering a wide array of facilities and programs. It typically includes a state-of-the-art fitness center, a variety of group exercise classes, extensive aquatics facilities, childcare, preschool, summer camps, and various cultural and recreational activities designed for all ages and backgrounds. It serves as a central hub for wellness, family engagement, and community building in the Akron area.
The Shaw JCC typically features two main pools: a lap pool, which is generally maintained at approximately 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and a warmer water or therapy pool, usually heated to about 90 degrees Fahrenheit to accommodate different aquatic activities and therapeutic uses.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The community center receives high praise for being an excellent, family-friendly facility, particularly noted for its safe swimming areas (including a good outdoor pool early in the season and a clean, year-round indoor pool), a baseball field, and other amenities like tennis courts and a snack shack. Many appreciate the option to work from shaded areas. The new Executive Director is commended for their active listening and transparency, fostering a strong community spirit. However, a significant concern is the very poor customer service regarding membership cancellations, with one member reporting an 11-month struggle, unanswered emails, and continued charges, leading to frustration and a perception of prioritization of money over member support.

Always a great swim and great picnic table to work and still see my kiddos safe while swimming! Also great baseball field for my boy when he plays there!
This is mostly about the pool, particularly the outdoor pool open the summertime, but also the indoor pool. I do not make use of gym facilities or other programs there, but I they seem to be fine and I never hear anything but positive comments about them. The outdoor pool itself could do with better filtration and bottom cleaning toward the end of Summer but it is not bad earlier in the season. The indoor pool is much cleaner as it is used by far fewer people and a very nice option to have if the outdoor pool is particularly crowded, if you are getting over a sunburn, or if you don't want to deal with sunscreen on a blazing hot, sunny day. Also, it is open year-round! I have also added some aerial photos showing the entire facility, including ballfield and tennis courts.
Great facility for kids and families. You don’t have to be Jewish to go there. The outdoor pool and snack shack are great. I like to pull a chair into the shade and work on my laptop. The new Executive Director cares about everyone who walks through the door and is an active listener. I like to donate to them because I can actually see where the money is being used. It’s refreshing and I feel like I’m supporting the community.
Hands down the very best community center I have ever belonged to. I love the people, the events and all of the cool equipment. Definitely recommend.
I love the J but I am so unimpressed with the membership system. I have been trying to cancel my membership for literally 11 months, while my emails go unanswered and I continue to be charged every month. If I ever get out of this membership I’m never renewing it. Nice facility but seems like they are more concerned with taking my money than they are in customer service.
