The Downtown Boise YMCA, located at 1050 W State St, Boise, ID, is a prominent community fitness and wellness center offering a wide range of facilities including fitness equipment, gymnasiums, and multiple swimming pools, dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for all ages.
The facility features a 25-yard lap pool, typically maintained at a cooler temperature suitable for exercise, usually around 80-82°F (27-28°C). It also includes a warmer therapy pool, generally kept at about 90-92°F (32-33°C) for rehabilitation and relaxation.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews present a mixed but largely negative view of the facility. Positive feedback highlights challenging classes with upbeat facilitators, helpful staff (specifically mentioning Fareed), and good morning coffee. However, significant concerns are raised, including a filthy environment, persistent maintenance issues like a broken fan in the cardio room leading to unbearable heat and smell, and managers who are unresponsive to complaints. The swimming pool experience is heavily criticized for its restrictive rules for children, small designated areas, infrequency of the kiddie pool's opening, and confusing goggle policies. Furthermore, members report unhelpful or unhappy staff, a lack of clear signage, and an overall decline in the facility's quality over time.

Please look at the pics I took. I could take hundreds if I wanted to. Filthy to say the least. Two of the managers disregard members requests for a clean and safe environment. They just say it will happen when it happens. After several complaints over several months by myself and other members, they have yet to fix the only fan that is meant to circulate the entire cardio room! it has been nonfunctional or just blows to the left side leaving the gym smelly and way too hot 🥵. Multiple times we have had to leave it was so bad.
I always feel better after an hour or two at the Boise Down town Y! Classes are always challenging, facilitators are upbeat, and eat to follow. The morning coffee is great!
The swimming at this location is pretty bad. If your child wants to be in the water with out you, they have to pass a swim test, if the swim test is passed, they can be in 1 small closed off area, that area also includes where the slide ends. Not only is that area all ready small but because you can't be in the way of the ending of the slide, it makes the area even smaller. If you, the adult, didn't plan on swimming and your child doesnt pass the swim test then you will be packing up and going straight home as the kiddie pool seems to rarely be open, which is the 1 and only place a child can be with out passing the swim test and with out an adult within arms length of them in the water. Also, if your kid wants to go down the slide, prepare them to be able to swim under water with out goggles as there are no goggles allowed on the slide. They are totally okay with you wearing your required colored necklace down the slide even though every kid coming down the slide ended up with the necklace flying up from the water and it covering there nose and eyes, but yeah, goggles are not allowed. 🤦♀️ Unfortunately the pool was a huge let down. A few of the lifeguards were snotty, perhaps just having a bad day. Can't wait for the new DT location, hoping it's more like the Tomlinson location, which is fabulous!
Hadn’t been there since 2015. And it got so much worse. Had no help from any staff on where to go. The majority of the staff couldn’t make eye contact with me and looked like they hated their jobs. Serious lack of signage specific to locker rooms in the Basement and Pool areas. Not impressed at all. Go to Hillsdale or West for a better experience.
Love this place!!!! Everyone is so helpful. Fareed is such a treat. Numerous classes with amazing teachers! Thank you for showing up and doing the hard work with us.
