What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews present a mixed view of MIT's athletic facilities. One highly negative experience details an MIT student's inability to graduate due to a swim test technicality (not touching a wall) despite being an elite swimmer, leading to significant financial and academic repercussions related to the pool being closed. Other reviews are generally positive, highlighting convenient facilities for students and affiliates, a good selection of cardio equipment (though limited squat racks), and a clean, uncrowded Alumni pool that feels safe during the pandemic. However, there was a criticism regarding a lifeguard using their phone, raising safety concerns. There's also an appreciative note about the general enthusiasm for sports at MIT.
Reviews
Every MIT student has to pass the swimming test here to graduate, and I was a top swimmer throughout my teenage years and just barely missed making the '00 Olympic trials (breaststroke and IM) by 0.17 seconds so obviously knew how to swim, but they said I failed the swimming test because I didn't touch the wall (you have to swim down and touch the wall and turn around and swim back but there were non-swimmers crowded around the far wall so I couldn't technically touch it). So senior year they said oh by the way, we show you failed your swim test freshman year so you can't graduate until you pass it or take a basic swim class. I said that's ridiculous, I am candidate for the '04 Olympic swim team now, all the swim coaches there know it, just ask around but they said you didn't touch the wall. You have to touch the wall, turn around and swim back and they said I didn't do it so I can't graduate! I said I'll go down right now and show you, they said nope, the pool is closed for repairs and I'll have to re-enroll and come back next semester at $50,000 cost which I couldn't afford so I never graduated because of this damned pool. One star for that but I add another star because it's a decent pool otherwise.
Nice facilities. Nothing glamorous but gets the job done. Rating 3 stars because the lifeguard was on her phone too many times. As a former lifeguard, it would be unacceptable to use or even have your phone with you while working. Not the time to be distracted.
So much inspired to see people involved in sports at MIT!
Really convenient gym for MIT affiliates and students. Lots of treadmills, stationary bikes, and a standard suite of machines. Only a couple of squat racks and benches though, so you'll went to pick a slower time if you want to do barbell exercises.
This review is for the Alumni pool. I've found that the pool is clean and uncrowded. I feel very safe in the time of the pandemic.
