Locker-room-equipped, outdoor pool for lap swimming, plus lessons, music and a mosaic.
The pool(s) at the Marie H Reed Center Pool are indoor and heated, generally maintained at a comfortable temperature suitable for recreational swimming, lessons, and various aquatic activities. While specific temperatures are not always publicly listed, indoor community pools in this region are typically kept between 80-82°F (26-28°C).
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The facility receives mixed reviews, with the pool itself generally being praised as a good 25-yard length, free for DC residents, and fostering a friendly swimming community where people share lanes. The opening desk staff member is also noted as excellent. However, significant issues exist, particularly concerning the lifeguard staff, who are described as not great; problems include excessively loud music, frequent no-shows leading to significant delays in opening times (sometimes hours), and a severe incident where a lifeguard screamed at an autistic child and their parent. Other common complaints include strange and inconsistent operating hours, frequent instances of the pool not opening on time, and a desire for Sunday hours. Locker rooms are criticized for being dirty (floors with hair and dirt) and lacking space, and the pool can get very crowded during peak evening hours (5-7 pm). Overall, the amenities are considered barebones.

Nice pool and the gentleman at the desk who opens up is great. Unfortunately, the lifeguard staff is not great: sometimes the music is so loud you can't hear anything and lifeguards won't turn it down, plus the pool doesn't always open in the morning because lifeguards don't show up. Last week, it was supposed to open at 6 am but apparently didn't open until 8:30 am.
Had a horrible experience here. Brought my autistic son to the pool to watch his older cousin swim and the lifeguard got right in my child's face screaming at him. I tried to find out the problem and the lifeguard then turned on me screaming in my face. I could not get the lifeguard to stop screaming and I took my son out of there. Horrible experience for my child.
The swimming community at Marie Reed is a joy. People are always willing to split the lane when it gets busy, so you can swim at your own pace. The pool is free for DC residents; that makes a big difference for someone like me who swims regularly for exercise. The pool hours are rather strange, so be sure to look ahead before leaving home. I’d love to see the pool open on Sundays too.
The pool is great -- 25 yards length-wise. It gets PACKED during 5-7pm -- sometimes three people lap swimming in each lane, with at least one lane left open for kids/teens/lessons. The locker rooms leave much to be desired. The floors are always dirty -- not a place you want to walk around in barefoot unless you don't mind having dirt and hair stuck to your feet. Not a lot of room to change your clothes. Last time, a homeless woman was in there to shower and was talking/cursing to herself -- which I didn't mind too much since she kept to herself. Overall, the pool is great. The services/amenities are extremely barebones.
The pool sometimes does not open during their official opening hours. Crowds waiting outside to get in but doors locked.
