My first time visiting the Theresa Banks Memorial Aquatic Center. The staff is friendly and the establishment was clean with lots of nice equipment. The rest rooms were very clean. The inside is new and look to be updated. There was a nice playground for the children to play and a big outdoor basketball court. There was plenty of free parking available to the public. I like this location it seems to be a great family friendly environment to come and workout and enjoy a day with family and friends.
Not a clean pool facility. They allow unlimited number of parents wearing street shoes to sit on pool deck and also eat. This creates puddles of dirty water on pool deck. Also a lot of dirty equipment around deck and chlorine smell so strong due to it probably working hard to clean so much bacteria. Bathroom facilities were also not very clean and smelled. Will not be returning.
for the facility: they were showing law and order: special victims unit on the main tv screen during summer morning rec activities; and, acted like i was nuts when i suggested maybe a show about violent crime against children wasn't ideal with so many kids around. even before commenting on the questionable television choices, staff seemed annoyed to be dealing with people. cute playground, though. for the rec and park swim program - bobbers class: based on the pg rec and parks class description ("swimmers begin to develop positive attitudes and safe practices around water.") i enrolled my 4 year old. on the first day of class, the children were lined up on the deck and one-by-one made to jump into the water only to be dragged under without warning. the kids on deck were clearly becoming highly agitated and fearful. most were soon crying as they waited their turn. every child dunked came up sobbing and with noses full of water (they were not prepared in any single way, to include not being told how to hold breath or pinch nose). i walked my child out to a chorus of scared, weeping preschoolers. teaching through fear and distress will NOT develop a positive attitude toward swimming. in fact, such swimming trauma *prevents* children from wanting to learn or enjoy time in the water, as often as not. i have met too many people who never fully learned how to swim, or never swim for enjoyment or fitness, specifically because they were dunked without consent or held under water. i strongly encourage pg county to update the curriculum to evidence-based practices aimed at ACTUALLY creating positive attitudes using play-based methods, preparing the children well before submerging, working up to submersion (chin first, cheek next, etc), practicing breath holding techniques, and so forth. at the very least, if the curriculum will remain unchanged, make it clear to caregivers the true nature of the course before they spend the money to register. we will not be returning to class. and, honestly, i am not sure i trust pg rec and parks programs in general to create a nurturing learning space for my child.
The pool size was great, especially for the kids. But for an indoor pool…the water was freezing. The worst of it was how dirty the floors were and the puddles all around the chairs as if it had NEVER been clean. We usually don’t come to this pool but greenbelt was closed so we tried it out. I won’t be back unless it’s a last resort like today.
Staff is friendly, helpful and attentive to students needs,, however the facility is not clean. Pool deck area and bathrooms need some serious cleaning. Compared to other swimming facilities this one is at the bottom.
