What are people saying (AI review summary)? The YMCA receives mixed reviews. Positive aspects include good rates for seniors, a large facility with many programs and resources, helpful front desk staff, and excellent experiences with private swim instructors and lifeguards at the Alden pool. However, there are significant recurring negative points such as poor cleanliness (excessive hair in pools and showers), lack of lifeguard enforcement regarding kids in lap lanes, a persistent lack of AC throughout the summer (raising safety concerns), inadequate supervision of children in the gym and daycare (leading to potential safety incidents), and poor staff response during facility issues like power outages. Additionally, several users reported difficulties and unexpected hurdles when trying to cancel memberships, resulting in continued charges.

They offer great rates for seniors!! There is a cold pool and a warm pool. Swim time is limited in summer because of camps. ALWAYS Lots of long hair strands in the pool and women's shower floor. There is no requirement for people to put up their hair. They don't use the nets throughout the day to clear the hair. Maybe too Kid friendly! When I go to swim laps, kids play in the lap lanes. The parents, nor the lifeguards tell them to go to the family swim side. I told the lifeguard about the kids and they told me that I could tell the kids to move. The kids argued with me 3 times and stayed in the lap anyway. How is this my job? The Shrewsbury YMCA has a sign by their pool that clearly states the swimming rules. Maybe Greendale YMCA could put a sign at the Alden pool. The kids don't go over in the cold pool. The Shrewsbury YMCA is also immaculate. There were people cleaning the women's locker room while I was there. I have to give the Greendale YMCA commendations because they cleaned the shower curtains or brought new ones right after I posted my review about the black mold. However, they didn't see them all right next to the shower curtain. I guess I should have showed a picture of that too. On the upside I had a really nice calm swim on a Saturday afternoon!!! 🤩
I have been going to the YMCA for a long time, though recently reactivated my account after finishing school. There has been no AC all summer, which seems like a safety concern. When I called and asked when the AC would be back, I was told “in a few months”, or essentially when the hottest months of the year are over. Also in the summertime, there is far too many children in the gym. I nearly hit a kid with a very heavy weight because they were fooling around on equipment next to me. The staff watching the children was talking to other people and not watching the kids. Lastly, the power went out (7/31), while I was on the stairmaster. While YMCA can not control the electricity, they did not even check to see if everyone was ok (this was the same staff member who wasn’t watching the kids) I (along with others) could have gotten injured on the machine and it was not a thought in the staffs mind.
Huge facility in decent condition with lots of great programs, features, and resources. YMMV depending on what you use it for, but my experience with private swim instructors, life guards, and pool facility (Alden family pool and changing rooms) has been excellent. Everyone I've interacted with has been great.
the front desk was kind and helped me set up my free trial. the daycare wasnt really watching my son to well they didnt know where he went when i picked him up but we found him. the pool was nice
WARNING!! They won’t cancel your membership when you ask them and will continue charging you. I called and asked them to cancel my membership and I was told I was all set. Then a couple months later I noticed i was still being charged. I then called again and was told that they don’t let people cancel with out them filling out paper work so then I had to jump through hoops and fill out paperwork to finally get my membership canceled.
