What are people saying (AI review summary)? Reviews for the YMCA are mixed, with positive comments highlighting friendly staff (though not universally consistent), good facilities including a clean pool and sauna, and a generally professional atmosphere. However, significant criticisms arise from inconsistent policy enforcement and communication among staff, leading to frustrating customer experiences. A major recurring issue is the poorly managed childcare program, which frequently experiences weekend cancellations, lacks Sunday availability, and is seen as neglected by management despite rising membership dues. Other negative points include a desire for more evening classes, an inconvenient digital document signing process, and a general perception of poor management in certain areas.

Updated review: Give credit where credit is due. Friendliness of staff is much better. Full pool/sauna setup plus much more. I'd like more evening classes, but overall a solid Y. It still loses a star for the new trend of attempting to sign a doc you can't see through a touchpad.
I went to a yoga class last Thursday and I was prepared to pay $25 for a day pass even though I was only going for less than an hour. The woman behind the desk looked up my name in the system and because I had never been a guest there before, she said I wouldn't have to pay for the pass and had another free pass before I had to start paying for the passes. After the yoga class I was so excited and wanted to join. I went back yesterday to use my 2nd pass and a different person behind the counter acted like I was trying to get in for free, and the woman who put me in the system didn't even put any notes down when she took my info. Then she tells me about their policies and asked what the woman looked like. Really? I know gym policies. So I left. And I will never do something I enjoyed again because of this situation. I have depression, so me even going out of the house once I am home is a huge step and I really liked the people who teach the yoga class. But to be treated like I didn't understand how the rules work and being told incorrect information and then wasting time and gas to drive there, what's the point when the things I enjoy get dangled in front of me and then ripped away by an employee who told me incorrect information.
Very nice facility and friendly staff. I would give it 5 stars were it not for the childcare, which was a major factor of why we chose the YMCA. The last 2 months have been plagued with cancellations mostly on weekends. I sincerely hope they hire more staff (the ones in the day care on weekdays are fantastic, by the way) and make the program more accessible. Update:6/10/2025 - I am now certain that we would go somewhere else if another gym had daycare. As it is, they have cancelled childcare several times in the last 2 weeks (today without even a phone call so it was a drive there for nothing), they never have it on Sunday, and it seems management doesn't want to address the issue. I don't blame the wonderful ladies who work in childcare, I blame the management for not having on-call people and resolving this situation. The dues keep going up every year, but they certainly don't put it toward hiring anyone. Once our kids are in preschool we will go elsewhere and pay half the price.
My go to spot is the Bethlehem YMCA, I have visited the Guilderland location. The Guilderland location has a great pool. It’s clean. The staff is friendly and overall it has a professional vibe.
Poorly managed. Don’t come here if you have any other choice. I came to the weight room today, a guy came to me said I have to lock my coat in the locker. I’ve been coming here for the last 4 years and today was the first time I heard this rule, and there was no one ever told me I can’t do it. I always put my coat at a corner that never bother anyone, compared to those who don’t wipe the machine or smash the weight, bringing a coat is the most harmless action. They fail to stop the more harmful actions but set me as their target. I told him I don’t have a lock with me today, maybe I can do my training with my coat. The guy said no, and he kept saying there is rule, he can show me the rule, but not providing any useful solutions for right now problem. Meanwhile his tone wasn’t nice at all, he’s like blaming someone who just made a huge mistake, which to me is something that can’t be smaller. And all of these are because they failed notifying me the rule 4 years ago. Let me tell you what you should do, you should first talk to people NICELY, tell them they can finish training for today and remember to bring a lock next time. I’d like to do that if so.
