What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews for the facility present a mixed picture. Many members appreciate the uncrowded gym, well-equipped workout room, and excellent main pool with a splash pad. It is highly praised as a welcoming environment for families, offering a variety of children's activities, effective childcare, and popular programs like Camp Shelanu and swimming lessons (with specific instructors receiving commendation). The staff and community aspect are generally seen as positive. However, consistent criticisms include issues with cleanliness and general upkeep, particularly regarding the locker rooms, steam rooms, and the kids' pool (which is described as dirty with falling tiles). Other concerns involve inconvenient scheduling for lap swimming and workout classes (often during working hours), a sauna that isn't hot enough, and dissatisfaction with membership cancellation policies, including being locked into payments and a perception that feedback from surveys is ignored. Some reviewers suggest it's not ideal for single adults seeking a basic, clean gym.

It’s great gym and not too crowded. Awesome basketball court. I enjoy meeting people there and staff is nice. I wish the locker rooms were cleaner and general upkeep. The kids pool is always dirty and tiles falling off.
Been a member for a couple of years and have mixed feelings about this place. The work out room is decent and never too crowded, has everything you need. I enjoy swimming laps in the pool however the way they schedule their lap swim is really inaccessible to most people, and confusing. I wish I could participate in workout classes but most of them are during the day when I work. I enjoy buying babka there on fridays as well. The lockerooms are not always as clean as they should be and the sauna doesnt get hot enough to be worth sitting in. Many improvements can be made.
Steam room and locker room was dirty. Ask for feedback via surveys, then say they never heard the feedback - basically ignoring the surveys I guess. Went to cancel membership since I hadn't used it even once after what I saw but fine print locks you in for 6 months so you end up paying for six months even if you don't use the facility. They should have refunded the money. It works great if you have children who need a variety of activities and community activities. For single adults who are just looking for a clean good gym not so much - go to the YMCA instead. The Richmond, VA Jewish Community Center is awesome but not the Durham one.
My son was there for swimming lessons, Claire was great with him!!!
We love our membership here! The childcare makes it easy for parents to find time to visit the gym and there are a variety of fitness classes to choose from. My six-year-old loves Camp Shelanu and is excited to go back again this Summer. The pool is also amazing with a splash pad for even the youngest of guests. Everyone is welcoming and friendly and it's just a lovely place to visit.
