Family-friendly recreation center featuring a workout area, pool and classes.
The Kirkwood YMCA typically maintains its indoor pools at a comfortable temperature suitable for various activities, including lap swimming, water exercise, and family recreation. While exact daily temperatures may vary, YMCA recreational pools are generally kept in the range of 80-84°F (26.7-28.9°C).
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews for the YMCA present a mixed but generally critical picture. Positive feedback highlighted well-maintained basketball courts, sufficient gym equipment and space, and some appreciation for courteous staff and general customer service. However, significant concerns were raised regarding poor refund policies and unhelpful customer service responses for programs like summer camp and swim lessons, leading to dissatisfaction and a resolve not to return. A major issue for female members was an uncomfortable and unsafe workout environment due to persistent staring and harassment from male members, with staff reportedly failing to resolve these issues despite repeated complaints. Other criticisms included overcrowded swim classes with minimal instruction, outdated locker rooms and some equipment, and a general lack of gym etiquette. Suggestions for improvement included adding more free weights and implementing clearer, larger signage for facility and room closure times to enhance guest experience.

Extremely terrible place for summer camp. Their refund policy is simply the worst. What's worse is their response to my inquiry for a refund. When I asked about the cancellation policy, they responded with "no refunds within 2 weeks" but more importantly jumped to the conclusion that my daughter will not be attending the camp by adding "we will notify the administrator that your daughter will not be attending the camp"! We will make sure that we will attend this camp we paid for, but will never ever...I mean never ever...attend any YMCA camps or events.
Best kept basketball court floors in the area. I wish other Y's maintained their gym floors this well. Staff are courteous and helpful. I do wish that there were more free weights, however there's enough equipment and space for a great workout between all of the rooms and pool. I've seen guests get frustrated when told that a room closes 15 minutes before the entire facility does. The signage with this info is too small and easily missed. My suggestion is to post BIG signs that communicate such details. Thus, folks can plan their workouts accordingly. Otherwise, it can feel like you're being hurried out without a just reason. Thank you for caring and being great! With some minor tweaks you can offer even greater experiences to guests!!!
My Experience with the Kirkwood YMCA was extremely unplesant. When we signed our daughter up for swim lessons, they informed us there was not enough people taking the class for for them to keep the scheduled class so we could either do private lessons, try the class below or get a refund (keep in mind this was after registration had closed, becomes important later). I chose the option to have her try the class below. The class was over crowded with kids and the level of instruction she was given was minimal at best. I asked them for a refund based on her not enjoying the class an dnot getting anything out of it, mentioning that we had tried a different class and that it was a better fit our daughter and I was told I could not get a refund because the registration deadline had already past. This of course is a lie because I had already been given the option for a refund. This was my first experience with the YMCA and will likely be my last. If you have gotten this far, please look a Foss swim school or Lifetime, both seem to be much better at teaching and customer service.
If you are a woman, do not work out at the Kirkwood YMCA. I do not feel I can work out comfortably because I constantly get stared at (not glances, stares) by other gym members, specifically men. I am not asking to be stared at when I am minding my own business. In the small weight room with no air circulation, I feel more safe in baggy clothing than tight, and even then, “safe” is a stretch, as the harassment does not stop there. You would most likely overheat in baggy clothing and still be stared at. I have voiced my concerns to many staff members, on some occasions in tears, and yet the problems remain. Although I live extremely close to this location, I would rather drive out of my way to another location. Additionally, the lack of gym etiquette is absolutely ridiculous, as the rules are broken every day. I have never encountered such an unprofessional and erratic gym.
Good customer service, but the locker room and some of the equipment is getting pretty old.
