What are people saying (AI review summary)? The provided reviews offer a mixed perspective on the YMCA. While one long-term member commends the facility for its numerous machines, programs, friendly staff, and cleanliness, they express significant disappointment regarding the perceived lack of a 'Christian atmosphere,' citing issues like women in sports bras, vulgar language/clothing, and aggressive behavior, along with perceived inconsistent policy enforcement. Other reviews highlight various negative experiences primarily centered on staff professionalism and customer service. These include a potential member being deterred by apathetic front desk staff and an uncomfortable application process, criticisms of the micro T-ball program for disengaged coaches and poor communication about cancellations, and multiple incidents of rude or unprofessional staff interactions with parents and children, leading to concerns about fairness, accountability, and the overall treatment of families.

I’ve been coming to the Y for over a decade, between this location and the one in NW Wichita. Overall, it’s very good with a lot of machines, tons of programs, friendly staff and a decently clean facility. There are however some issues, namely with the false impression this is a Christian atmosphere. You will witness women exercising in sport bras only, the occasional vulgar language spoken and depicted on clothing and excessive yelling while throwing weights. I’ve mentioned at least the sports bra situation to the desk and they say there’s nothing they can do since the policy of the management is to not directly address it. When I’m here by myself, I don’t have an issue but it gets uncomfortable when I am here with my family. I will give the staff credit regarding the correction of a member with vulgar language on clothing although, it should have been corrected when that member entered since everyone must go past the desk for sign in. I believe modesty is a family value and I’d like to see it emphasized in a professed outwardly family organization. You won’t be let down by any branch of the Y in Wichita for fitness and fun but, don’t be surprised in 2025 if you see something you weren’t expecting.
Employees let $800 walk out of the door today. The facility looked okay but no one at the front desk seemed like they wanted to be there. As I was waiting to be helped I was overhearing other applicants being exasperatedly grilled to a level where I wasn't sure if they were signing up for the gym or a second-choice candidate for a job or apartment application. With the level of apathy I experienced today as a potential customer, I have concerns about how my family would be treated after they take our money. I might reconsider in the future but for now I'm not sure if this facility is the right fit for my family.
Im not rating the facility as a whole im rating the micro t ball portion of it. Im not sure who is in charge of it but it was quite a mess over all. With that said I will say I do like how college baseball players were helping coach, but with that said you could tell that they didn't want to be there or care. We would even ask them questions and they would say I dont know im just here because I have to be. The communication was horrible especially with letting us know if games were cancel due to weather. They said we can't decide until 30 min before. Which isn't the best because if we are working we are trying to plan the rest of the day and if we dont know if the game is still on or not can mess with the whole night especially having toddlers. I was really hoping it was going to be better because my little guy loves baseball and we like coming to this ymca over the one that is closer to where we live in bel aire.
I took my daughter to toddler time, as a young mom, with my mom and we take turns with my daughter in the water while one of us tans, and the lead guard came up to me asking if i had a kid there, and if she was unsupervised, other moms around heard it and also thought it was rude.
Went to enjoy my son’s basketball game 1/25/25 and while visiting Emma (was working in the gym for games) came up to my 2 year old and took her ball. Made my child cry and when asking for the ball back she refused, I asked her to take away ALL YMCA balls from the kids if she was “removing equipment” like she claimed but she was sassy and rude. She smirked at me and put her hand on her hip with a disrespectful attitude when I told her I was going to report her to the front desk. For someone who works around kids, you’d think she would treat them all fairly! Reported her to Alex the MOD who was very kind and allowed us to borrow another ball for my child to play with then he verified that other kids had the same balls but she only singled us out. Pictures below show other kids playing with the same ball but apparently Emma can’t stand toddlers and had a vendetta against mine specifically. She didn’t apologize when we left, she simply laughed when I told where to have a better day. The YMCA needs to be more accountable for their employees ESPECIALLY if they are going to be around children. Maybe that’s not the job for Emma or the YMCA should better train their staff to be fair in equal in all that they do especially when we all pay to be there and utilize the same tools.
