What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews present a mixed perspective on the YMCA. A significant portion expresses strong disappointment and anger regarding the recent termination of a beloved, long-time fitness instructor named Michelle at the Fox Valley branch, attributed to the new CEO, Chris Shue. Members describe Michelle as an inspiring and caring individual who fostered a welcoming and supportive community, with many questioning the value of their memberships and the Y's commitment to its values in light of her departure. Conversely, other reviews highlight positive experiences at various YMCA locations, including Fox Valley and Plano. These positive points commend the excellent facilities, state-of-the-art equipment, diverse and well-taught group fitness classes (mentioning instructors like Michelle, Jess, Erin, Dodie, and Melissa at Plano), and exceptional children's programs and swim lessons. The overall sentiment in these positive reviews emphasizes a strong sense of community, professional and attentive staff (including a welcoming Michelle at the Fox Valley front desk), and a supportive environment for families and individuals.

I’ve been going to the Y for quite awhile now. I take 8-9 classes a week and love them and the instructors are AMAZING. I found out that one of the best instructors of 15+ years is no longer there ! WHY ? She has literally helped thousands of people on their get healthy journey . Very disappointed and angry at the upper ups thinking that this is a good idea. How can I feel confident that another, and another may have the same treatment? I know that there is a new CEO…. FIX THIS !!
I am extremely disappointed to hear that Michelle is no longer at the Y. She was the reason it felt like a second home to me. Michelle had a way of making everyone feel welcome, supported, and capable of reaching their goals. She genuinely cared about people, and it showed in every single class she taught. I only do the instructor-led classes at the Y, and honestly it’s the only reason I have a membership. Knowing that such a big piece of that experience is now missing really makes me question whether keeping my membership is worth it. The fact that the YMCA could so easily let go of Michelle — someone who truly embodied what the YMCA stands for — is incredibly upsetting. Her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled.
So sad that the new CEO Chris Shue fired our beloved fitness instructors Michelle! We would love an explanation as to why she was let go, but in Illinois he doesn’t have to give one. She has worked there over a decade and has supported me and so many others in my fitness journey for years now. The negative impact of her not being around is tremendous and nobody could fill her Shues. The Fox Valley FAMILY will not be the same without its valued family member Michelle.
My partner and I visited the Fox Valley Family YMCA for the first time today and it was an absolute standout when it comes to fitness, family, and community. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted with warmth and professionalism—especially from Michelle at the front desk, who was incredibly helpful and welcoming. This YMCA facility offers something for everyone. The cycling studio is high-energy and motivating, the yoga studio is a peaceful retreat, and the music studio adds a unique creative touch you won’t find at most gyms. The large indoor courts provide endless opportunities for basketball, pickleball, and other activities, making it a perfect place for both casual games and superior athletes. The exercise gym itself is one of our favorites, with state-of-the-art equipment that is well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels, which was very important to my partner as he is a 600 lb squatter. Nevertheless, whether you're into strength training, cardio, or functional workouts, you'll find exactly what you need. But what truly sets this YMCA apart is the people—friendly, encouraging, and truly embodying the spirit of community. For families, the Children’s Center and youth programs are nothing short of phenomenal. The staff here is exceptionally attentive and caring, making sure that kids are not only engaged but also in a safe and nurturing environment. It’s clear they put a lot of effort into making this a fantastic place for families. Job well done, Fox Valley! We will be back!
Our family has been a part of the YMCA Plano Branch community since August/September 2024, and it's been a wonderful experience. We initially enrolled our children in the swim lessons, and it was incredible to watch their confidence and swimming skills improve week after week. The instructors are patient and encouraging, creating a positive learning environment. My husband and I were so impressed that we decided to try the group fitness classes, and we've been hooked ever since! The variety of classes and the supportive atmosphere have made it easy to make fitness a regular part of our routine. The YMCA Plano Branch truly feels like a place where the whole family can thrive. What sets this Y apart is the amazing community. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging, regardless of fitness level. Instructors like Michelle, Jess, Erin, Dodie and Melissa are fantastic at motivating you, offering modifications and personalized encouragements. The workouts are always challenging but enjoyable. I've made some great friends and feel so much stronger and healthier. If you're looking for a workout group that feels like family, this is it!
