Kernersville Family YMCA

About

A family-friendly facility with multiple swimming pools, gyms and a basketball court.

While specific pool temperatures for the Kernersville Family YMCA are not explicitly detailed on their public website, YMCA facilities typically maintain lap pools at temperatures ranging from 79-82°F (26-28°C). Warmer or therapy pools, if available, are generally kept around 88-90°F (31-32°C) to accommodate various user needs.

What are people saying (AI review summary)? This YMCA branch is largely praised for its comprehensive facilities, including a well-equipped gym with diverse options, multiple indoor and outdoor pools (featuring a splash pad, slides, and a lily pad bridge), a hot tub, and a sauna. Members frequently highlight the variety of group exercise classes like Yoga and Body Balance, as well as the highly beneficial childcare services, swim lessons, youth sports programs, summer camps, and after-school care. The large parking lot, cleanliness, and overall value of the membership are significant positives. Many employees are commended for being attentive, communicative, empathetic, and invested in guest safety, particularly for children. However, some concerns were raised, including a strong personal dislike for the co-ed hot tub and sauna. A notable complaint focused on inconsistencies with the advertised 5 AM opening time, with facilities like hot tubs, steam rooms, and locker rooms sometimes remaining locked. This led to a report of rude behavior and threats of membership termination from early morning staff towards a member who voiced concerns, sparking accusations of disrespect and discrimination, specifically towards a disabled member with a service dog. A minor maintenance issue regarding a missing donut on an outdoor pool rope course was also mentioned.

I love this Y. I come here most mornings and have never had a real concern. The parking lot is big, always parking available. The gym has plenty of options, whether you're new to fitness or are an expert. I like taking some of the classes that are offered, like Yoga and Body Balance, specifically. One of the best parts is the childcare that is included. Before my youngest started daycare, he was in the child care center while I worked out each morning. They worked really hard to help get him adjusted, it could have been easy for them to get frustrated since he cried for most of the time starting out-- but they were actually a huge help in getting him acclimated to a world where he can play with some friends-- and where this Mama can get healthy just down the hall. The indoor pools are great, my oldest took swim lessons here. When the outdoor pools are open in the Summer, we frequent them A LOT. My oldest has played several sports here and has learned a lot and made some friends-- as have I and my husband. I used to be on the Board a couple of years ago, and I got firsthand experience with the work that they do and how much they genuinely seem to care about what they do. It was truly an honor and a great experience. We have used the summer camp and the after-school care in the past, both convenient and fairly priced. I look forward to continuing my health journey here.

All employees-- whether they were based at the front desk or at the pool-- were attentive, communicative and empathetic. I could tell they were invested in the safety of their guests and went out of their way to ensure the children in our party had a positive experience. Kudos to the Kernersville Family branch team!

I’ve had so much fun at this facility. The staff are very helpful and ready to assist when needed. This facility is also very clean and organized. They have like two or three pools 🏊🏽‍♀️. They even have a nice hot tub and sauna 🧖🏽‍♀️ . The ONLY thing I don’t like about the hot tub and Sauna in this facility, is that it is co-ed. Other than that, the facility itself is great. I also really enjoy their splash pad. They have this really tall swirly slide 🛝, no thank you, it looks too scary 🫣 for me personally, however, all the children that get on it, seem to enjoy it. I like the Lilly pad bridge thing that the children play on at the outdoor pool 🏊🏽‍♀️. It’s very entertaining seeing the children play on it. Long story short, I enjoy coming to this facility. I would recommend coming here over all even though I don’t necessarily like the co-ed sauna 🧖🏽‍♀️ and hot tub 🛀 . That grosses me out. That’s Y I give this place a four star ⭐️. Nothing wrong with the facility at all, just my personal preference when it comes to the hot tub and sauna. I would truly like to enjoy the sauna 🧖🏽‍♀️ and hot tub knowing that no man is gonna come in while I’m in there. So I guess I won’t be using it. Not at this facility at least.

I GIVE THIS YMCA A 4 STARS AND LOVE THIS YMCA, 4 STAR REVIEW ONLY BECAUSE THIS PLACE CLAIMS TO BE OPEN AT 5AM AS I NEVER COME BEFORE 12 NOON HERE WHICH IS JUST A ROUTINE OF MINE EVERYDAY IN MY SCHEDULE MY WIFE JUST HAS TO SHOWER QUICKLY EVERY MORNING BEFORE WORK AT 7AM EVERY MORNING AS BUSY AS WE BOTH ARE WITH OUR LIVES AND WORK LIVES, WE BOTH GET TO THE YMCA AT 5AM ON 7/28/25 AND SCAN MINE AND MY WIFES YMCA MEMBERSHIPS TO FIND THE HOT TUBS AND STEAM ROOM, AND ALL THE LOCKER ROOMS, AND THE DOORS STILL LOCKED PAST 530AM ALMOST CLOSE TO 6AM WHICH SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AT ALL WHEN YOU CLAIM TO BE OPEN AT 5AM...ALSO WANT TO MAKE NOTE FOR SOME REASON I NOTICED FOR THE VERY 1ST TIME BEING A LATER IN THE DAY YMCA ATTENDEE AND YMCA MEMBER IN GENERAL THAT THE 5AM FRONT DESK STAFF HERE SEEM TO BE VERY RUDE TO MEMBERS, IF YOUR YMCA IS GOING TO CLAIM TO BE OPEN AT 5AM DURING THE WEEK THEN OPEN AT 5AM, GAS COSTS MONEY AND PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE AT 5AM TO FREELY WALK IN AND SCAN THEIR MEMBERSHIPS AND GET THEIR STUFF DONE NO PROLEM BEFORE WORK WHO ARE LIMITED ON THE TIME THEY HAVE BEFORE HEADING INTO WORK IN THE EARLY A.M HOURS...FOLKS ARE LIMITED ON THEIR TIME WHEN THEY WORK 2 JOBS AND WORK 17 HOURS A DAY 6 DAYS A WEEK AND ITS 11PM BEFORE ME AND MY WIFE CAN EVEN SPEND 1 HOUR TOGETHER IF WE ARE LUCKY BUT BILLS HAVE TO BE PAID, BUT ALL OF THIS IS BESIDES THE POINT, OTHERS IN GENERAL NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE DONT ALWAYS HAVE TIME TO SIT AROUND WAITING TO GET IN A QUICK HOUR HOT TUB OR STEAM ROOM SESSION IN BEFORE THEIR SIGNIFICANT OTHER HAS TO BE AT WORK OR WAIT UNTIL STAFF FEELS THEY WANT TO OPEN UP THE FACILITY....WHAT REALLY PISSES ME OFF IS IM ON DISABILITY AND BRING MY SERVICE DOG HERE 7 DAYS A WEEK WHICH BY ADA LAWS I HAVE THE RIGHT TO ATTEND ANY PUBLIC PLACE OR ITS CLEARLY DISCRIMINATION AGAINST MYSELF AND MY SERVICE DOG TO THREATEN OTHERS LIKE MYSELF BECAUSE FOLKS WHO ARE DISABLED YOU HAD THE RIGHT TO I FILE LAWSUIT IF THEY REALLY WANT TO GET UGLY AND PURSUE AND TAKE ACTION....THE YMCA IS LITERALLY ALL I HAVE TO DO FUN WITH MY SERVICE DOG OTHER THAN THE LIBRARY AND A COUPLE OTHER PLACES AND IS ALSO THE CASE FOR ALOT OF DISABLED INDIVIDUALS DURING THE DAY WHILE MY WIFE IS AT WORK AND CANT HELP THE FACT THEY HAVE TO WORK 17 HOURS A DAY, IF THERE WERE OTHER THINGS I COULD AFFORD TO DO INCLUDING MANY OTHERS TRUST ME THEY WOULD AND I WOULD TOO, ALSO GO I TO CHURCH HERE EVERY SUNDAY AT 10AM WHICH IS GREAT, BUT THE 5AM STAFF HERE THREATENED TO TERMINATE MIME AND MY WIFES YMCA MEMBERSHIP AND A BLACK LADY STAFF MEMBER GOT OFFENDED AND SUPER PISSED JUST BECAUSE I SIMPLY JUST MENTIONED HOW AT 5AM THEY CLAIM TO BE OPEN, BUT YET AT 530AM AND 6AM THE HOT TUBS AND LOCKER ROOMS AND ALL DOORS TO THESE AREAS ARE STILL NOT OPEN.......IF YALL ARENT GOING TO OPEN AT 5AM, THEN CHANGE YOUR HOURS OF OPERATION AND STOP THREATENING DISABLED FOLKS AND THEIR YMCA MEMBERSHIPS JUST BECAUSE THEY SIMPLY BRING UP AND OR MENTION A CONCERN FOLKS HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO SO WHEN THEY ARE PAYING FOR MONTHLY MEMBERSHIPS ITS NOT A CRIME!!! IT'S VERY UNPROFESSIONAL AND DOES NOT GIVE A CHROSTIAN YMCA NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION A GOOD REPUTATION, JUST OPEN AT 5AM AS YOU CLAIM OR SIMPLY CHANGE YOUR HOURS OF OPERATION.IT'S THAT EASY, BUT THE DISCRIMINATION AND THREATENING FOLKS IS NOT NECESSARY, IF IT WAS IT FOR PEOPLE PAYING FOR THE MEMBERSHIPS THEY DO, YOU GUYS WOULD NOT EVEN BE OPEN AT ALL OR BE ABLE TO REMAIN OPEN AND YOUR STAFF WOULD NOT EVEN HAVE A JOB, SO LETS NOT HAVE MEMBERS HAVE TO BABY AND TREAT YOUR STAFF LIKE CHILDREN HERE AND LETS ALL BE RESPECTUL TO EACH OTHER EVERYDAY 365 ON BOTH SIDES HERE OR SIMPLY QUIT YOUR JOB AS A YMCA STAFF IF YOU FOLKS CANT TREAT YOUR MEMBERS WITH THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE WHEN THEY ARE GIVING THEIR BUSINESS TO YOU FOLKS....ITS THAT SIMPLE!!! BUT THE DISRESPECT IS NOT APPROPRIATE OR NECESSARY AT ALL, JUST DO YOUR JOBS PROPERLY EACH THERE YOU GUYS OPEN UP AS YOU CLAIM AT 5AM DURING THE WEEK AND FOLKS WILL NOT HAVE ANY CONCERNS OR HAVE ANYTHING TO BE UPSET ABOUT AND NO ONE WILL COMPLAIN 😡😡😡😡😡😡

This is a great facility for all seasons. They offer a plethora of group exercises both on the floor and in the pool(s). They have a top-notch gym, and the best of it all is the outside pool with a separate splash/shallow pool area for very young children. And it's all part of your membership. A seasonal membership at any community pool is $400+, so for mw, this only is a huge money saver. I absolutely love it that they have several umbrellas there that provide shade for parents who do not use the pool. It's always brimming with people and children, and it's very popular among the regional YMCAs. Last time we went to the pool, one of the donuts on the rope course in the outside pool was missing, which makes it impossible for children shorter than 5.5. ft to complete the course. I hope that as good stewards of the facility, they will take the time to fix it.
