What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews for the pool present a mixed, though largely positive, impression. Multiple patrons praise the facility for being clean, well-maintained, and having friendly, cordial staff, with some expressing long-standing positive experiences and nostalgia. Conversely, one detailed negative review describes two problematic encounters during a family's visits: a young lifeguard repeatedly and disrespectfully addressed a 9-year-old African American boy as 'BOY' during a swim test, leading to accusations of racism, and another female lifeguard was perceived as condescending. A minor complaint from their first visit mentioned a life jacket being tightened excessively, causing a rub burn. These negative experiences led the family to decide not to return. Additionally, it is noted that admission is cash-only.

This has been on my mind for weeks now. We've only been 2x to this pool. The first time wasn't the same experience as the first. I felt like we were treated more respectfully and enjoyed our time more. It was just my kids and I, the only complaint I had that time, is the lifeguard who put my daughters life jacket on her, tightened it too tight so it cut into her crease and left a terrible rub burn that I had to treat with diaper cream a few days. Now, the second time has put a bad taste in my mouth, and we won't be coming back. I wouldn't mind if the employees in question are properly redirected. On our second visit, we came with my husband. We are a beautiful mixed family. My oldest, who's 9, decided he wanted to take the swim test again, the lifeguard who supervised this, he was young and disrespectful. He not once but repeatedly called my son BOY in an ugly tone. Now, brace yourself class. This is extremely disrespectful to call a male of any race, much less one with African American heritage. Every time he uttered BOY, I cringed. My husband heard him once as well and was honestly in shock, hoping he was mistaken. So, I feel as if he was being racist, there is absolutely NO excuse to call a little boy or male, BOY like that, repeatedly, yes he is a boy, but do yourself a favor, learn some words that are more socially acceptable to address people with since you are working in a position of "respect". If he didn't want to call him by name like the previous lifeguard at our first visit, he could've said buddy, bro, dude, I mean it was absolutely ridiculous. But also, not only that lifeguard but the superior way of the female lifeguard was not cool either. She talked down to us. I'll give you an example, which I really feel like she was being an idiot on this. I have a 2 yo who clings to me, barely even wants his daddy to hold him. My 7 yo was talking about the fact that every thing felt lighter in the water, an observation all kids make, anyways I was like sure is, even your baby brother is, do you want to see? And I'm standing there without intent of leaving, and I was handing the baby to him with my hands not leaving him. She doesn't directly address me. In fact, my husband thought she was talking to another lifeguard or something, but she said something like the baby can not leave an adult! My immediate thought, when it clicked what she said was, umm duh? We didn't enjoy our time as a result of these two. So, no, thank you, Camp Chowenwaw of the YMCA. You can keep your pool. We will find alternative means of cooling off this summer. BTW if this doesn't bother you, it's cash only to get in.
Great pool with a great staff. Always clean and maintained well. Never anything in the pool other than swimmers. And the lifeguards and staff are very friendly and cordial. Love to go here.
