Large center with a 50-meter competition pool, plus a 25-yard pool with adjustable depth.
The main competition pool at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center is typically maintained at a temperature of approximately 79-80°F (26.1-26.7°C) to meet competitive swimming standards and ensure swimmer comfort. Temperatures for other auxiliary pools, such as the diving well, may be similar or slightly varied.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The facility is described as pretty, clean, and beautiful with easy parking, with one reviewer suggesting it needs more publicity and a cafeteria. However, the majority of reviews highlight severe operational and safety concerns, particularly for competitive swim meets. Issues include constant technical breakdowns, difficult staff, and an awful ventilation system that causes poor air quality, chlorine blasts, and significant health problems for swimmers (coughing, difficulty breathing, hospitalizations) and spectators (coughing, burning eyes). Major safety concerns also involve a "shocky chair" that shocks swimmers and unmanaged crash areas in the upper stands. These problems lead to massive meet delays and make the facility largely unsuitable for large competitive events, despite its aesthetics.
Reviews
The facility is pretty, but horrible for any large competitive swim meet. There are constant delays due to numerous facility issues whether ventilation, wiring or the "shocky chair". They literally have a chair set up on deck with a camera which shocks swimmers if they touch the chair. This is a MAJOR safety issue. The Missouri Valley Senior Champs 2025 was the worst meet I have ever coached at in my entire coaching career.
Been here as a coach for many swim meets. The air quality is bad, my athletes don’t like the general feel of the facility, the facility staff is difficult to work with, and there are constant technical breakdowns that cause massive meet delays.
Wish that the facility did more to manage safety for simmers whose crash areas are in the upper stands.
Pretty facility. However, the ventilation system is awful. Kids left last week coughing and couldn't breathe. 2 kids from our team ended up in the hospital after a 911 call (it was that bad). Numerous other kids went on their own to the hospital as well. As a spectator, people were coughing and eyes were burning. We were told everytime someone splashes or dives in a blast of chlorine gets shot into the air. Who in the world thought that was a good idea. This facility should NEVER be allowed to hold a large meet much less any meet until this is fixed. No swimmmer or spectator should have to feel sick walking out of that building. Absolutely devastating as I heard this was an amazing facility.
I never knew this amazing center existed until I went to see my nephew swim! Man, this is fantastic and it needs more publicity to gain more swimmers! Clean, beautiful and easy access parking structure. Only thing I would add is a cafeteria!!
