Modern, family-friendly fitness center featuring an indoor pool, a sauna, weight machines, locker rooms and free classes.
The St. Paul Midway YMCA features two pools: a Lap Pool maintained at 81-82° F, and a Warm Water Teaching Pool kept at 90-91° F.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? Reviews for the YMCA present a mixed bag of experiences. On the positive side, one member highly praised a coach named Tonya C. for her balanced approach of encouragement and challenge, dedication, and positive impact on members' confidence and well-being. The gym facilities generally received good marks for being suitable for families and individuals, offering a good selection of equipment (free weights, machines, cardio), diverse class offerings, and a well-maintained pool, though the limited number of squat racks was noted. However, there were significant negative reports concerning the before and after school care program, described as unprofessional with staff allegedly yelling at children and not providing adequate supervision. Furthermore, multiple reviews highlighted serious concerns regarding racism and a lack of inclusivity. Incidents included a group of pickleball players allegedly showing selfish and possibly racist behavior by disregarding a person's turn, and a highly concerning report of a lifeguard allegedly showing racial discrimination by preventing Black children from entering the pool while allowing white children. Staff responsiveness to these issues was also criticized in some instances, with initial reception staff being unhelpful before another staff member intervened.

I’ve been a member of many health clubs over the years, but my experience at the YMCA has truly stood out — and that’s largely because of the incredible coaches who dedicate their time to helping us reach our health goals. In particular, I want to highlight the amazing Tonya C. Tonya is the kind of coach who strikes the perfect balance between encouragement and challenge. She knows how to push you past your comfort zone while making you feel supported every step of the way. Every class with her is more than just a workout — it’s a boost of confidence, a dose of motivation, and even a little therapy rolled into one. She sprinkles in wisdom and encouragement that make you believe in yourself and remind you that you can do hard things. It’s clear that Tonya pours her heart into what she does. Her energy, dedication, and genuine care for her class members elevate the entire experience. I feel so fortunate to have her as my instructor for multiple classes, and I always leave feeling stronger in both body and mind. Looking forward to many more sessions with Tonya — she truly makes the YMCA feel like a place where we grow together.
Good gym for families and individuals with convenient location. Has good selection of free weights, machines, and cardio. Class offerings are diverse and comprehensive. The pool is well maintained and bright. There are only 2 squat racks which can be busy.
Before and after school care program is a joke. The staff are very unprofessional and don’t actually watch or take care of the kids. The kids are routinely yelled at and told how awful they are. There are no requirements to be a staff other than to have a pulse. I would never recommend anyone to bring their children here. It is an awfully disgusting excuse for a child care program. Please do not bring your children here. It’s a wonder they are still operational.
Today I had a bad experience with the group of people who play pickball in the morning shift. For me, the most important thing is respect and equality in every sense because those are important values and principles for every person. Today I saw that many of those who play are selfish people, and I could say they are also racist, just because I'm a different color? Or because I'm from a different culture? The point is that many of them repeatedly disregarded my turn, and I was there for an hour and could only play one game, while others were playing many more times and kept repeating. I got upset and went to talk to those in the reception area, and one of them turned his face away from me and started whispering things so I couldn't hear him. The other person didn't know what to say. In the end, there was a third person who answered me and accompanied me to explain what happened. In the end, he spoke with the other players, but my annoyance and frustration stem from the fact that many people act with little empathy and behave selfishly toward those of us who are from different cultures. I'm sharing this bad experience so that what happened to me doesn't happen to other people, and that we should be empathetic and respect everyone equally.
Very horrible stuff, especially the lifeguards. Racist and unprofessional at its best. Today we had a racist encounter when we took the kids for swimming at this location. The lifeguard was literally not allowing other kids in the pool( blacks) and only letting the white kids in. We waited for an hour plus for him to let the kids in the pool. I’m really disappointed and disgusted by the behavior of the lifeguard for misrepresenting the whole motto of the YMCA( inclusive). I hope the management sees into this matter.
