What are people saying (AI review summary)? Reviews for this YMCA location are mixed. Positive feedback highlights the facility as a 'second home' for long-term members, praising the great staff and members, and appreciating its role in family development (e.g., teaching children to swim who later become lifeguards). New members also commend the good workout equipment, separate pools for men and women, and available showers and lockers. However, significant concerns are raised regarding staff professionalism and operational procedures. Several reviews point to unprofessional conduct, poor customer service, and a lack of interpersonal skills among some staff, particularly older female employees. One detailed account describes a pool coordinator's unprofessional, discriminatory, and humiliating handling of a minor incident. There are also complaints about a confusing and difficult billing system, cumbersome cancellation processes, and delayed refunds. Furthermore, understaffing in swimming classes, with only one trainer instead of the usual two, is cited as hindering student progress and causing parents to consider transferring children and canceling memberships. Reviewers suggest a need for improved hiring practices and staff training in professionalism, communication, customer relations, and conflict resolution.

I’ve noticed a concerning pattern with some of the staff at this location, particularly among the older female employees, who often appear unhappy in their roles and life. Unfortunately, my experience has been marked by unprofessional conduct, poor customer service, and a lack of basic business and interpersonal skills from several team members. interactions with staff are unpleasant and disrespectful whether in person or on the phone. I believe this BRONX YMCA location would benefit from more thorough hiring practices and staff training focused on professionalism, communication, and customer relations. Unfortunately, I never took the time to write a review before about SEVERAL of my personal experiences but I will one by one due to , a recent experience involving my mother urging me to speak up, in hopes that whoever is in charge of this facility will take these concerns seriously. My mother visited this gym today with her granddaughter. Guests, including my mother, were allowed into the pool without swim caps, and no rules were initially enforced regarding this. While in the pool, a situation arose involving another member who was recording his son. My mother respectfully intervened, asking him to remain calm and be mindful of others in the shared space. Rather than de-escalating the situation professionally, the pool coordinator, Danielle, (the name she gave my mom- Hispanic) chose to single out my mother and told her she needed to leave the pool. When my mother calmly explained that she was already on her way out, Danielle responded loudly, blowing her whistle to everyone in the pool by threatening to remove everyone from the pool if my mother did not exit. My mother then told everyone ‘don’t worry you don’t have to leave I’ll get out’ This was not only unnecessary and humiliating, but it was also incredibly unprofessional discriminatory and displays harassment. When my mother asked her first and last name she gave my mother her name, then proceeded to have the nerve to ask my mother her name, because my mom did not give her our last name she made a comment saying ‘don’t worry I’ll find it’ This reflects a lack of proper staff training customer service and conflict resolution which can lead to legal issues.
The facility is well kept overall- however their billing system and procedures make no sense and do not make it easy for the consumer. I’ve been a YMCA member for 2 years now. I had my account on hold because I wasn’t using the services and had to leave the country. I placed the account on hold, and recently saw my membership was renewed and taken off hold. I immediately went to cancel on a Thursday, and the front desk attendant tells me a manager won’t be in until Monday, and that someone would give me a call. A call for what if I submitted for a refund and cancellation? Then proceeds to tell me refunds take at least 2 weeks! How?!?! It’s ridiculous how these places make it so difficult for people to cancel and get their money back. I will definitely think twice before signing up to one of their facilities in the future.
Love this place. It’s my second home. Great staff & members. I’ve been a member for 15 + years. I raised my youngest son there where he learned to swim. Now he’s a lifeguard. I’m so thankful for everyone there ❤️
I started coming to YMCA yesterday and I’m absolutely loving it. They have good work out equipments, swimming pools or both men and women. All men and women can workout here. You can also shower after workout. They have lockers where you can put your stuff at.
I signed up my child for stage 3 swimming for the 2nd time here at this location, it seems to me either this location is short staffed or workers are calling out constantly. Classes here usually have two trainers to help . I’ve noticed lately it has been only 1 staff trainer and not two as the norm. Honestly it doesn’t help students swim better with lack of staff so students either have to repeat the same class and pay over and over a gain. I believe this is not fair and i will be transferring my child to another swimming class that has 2 staff trainers and that will take this serious since us parents are paying for this. I believe i will cancel my family membership and go elsewhere to a swimming school that will take this serious!
