About

Clean public pool that's family-friendly and safe and has lifeguards.

NYC Parks public outdoor pools, including Mapes Pool, are generally unheated. Therefore, the water temperature is not a fixed published figure and typically varies with the ambient outdoor temperature during its operational season.

What are people saying (AI review summary)? Reviews for this pool facility highlight both positives and significant negatives. On the positive side, the pool is praised for being clean, free of charge, and offering complimentary lunches for children and families. However, there are numerous criticisms regarding the facility's strict rules, which include prohibitions on phones, cameras, and keys in the pool area, and specific requirements for swimwear (e.g., clear white shirts). Many visitors reported experiencing rude and unprofessional staff, particularly concerning the enforcement of rules and entry policies. Issues such as capacity limits, allowing re-entry while new patrons wait, and staff speaking harshly to each other were also noted. Changing rooms were frequently described as small, cramped, and inconvenient. Some guests also mentioned portions of the pool being closed due to apparent lifeguard shortages, leading to overcrowding. Overall, while the pool itself offers some benefits, the customer service, strict rule enforcement, and facility limitations (like changing rooms and capacity management) led to many negative experiences and recommendations against visiting.

Pool is clean and free of charge. They give kids and their families little lunches that hit the spot right around 12. The pool has some strict but simple rules. Bring a towel, simple swimming suits or shorts and a lock to store whatever else you brought. Only the towels and yourself are allowed into the pool area aka no phones cameras keys are allowed. Also if you want to wear a shirt to the pool area it has to be a clear white shirt.

My experience was not the best, I remember that I have always seen this place plus my grandmother lives one block from here, until I decided to go, I have never known how it is to be in these places because I never visit these public places, but the situation was this my brother came from north carolina with my nephew but we decided to go a day before they leave, my nephew wanted to go to the beach but as his visit was so short it was not to go out or go to the beach or pool, I told him let's take the child to this or pool, well.... the situation is that when we arrived it was 6:11 pm there was no one in the front my brother entered from the men's side with the child I was waiting for someone to come to the front then he told me to enter from the women's side, I see a lady in a light blue shirt and I tell her that I am not going to bathe just that we want my 6 year old nephew to bathe I at the time had my phone in my purse but she was nice plus she was busy cleaning and told me to tell the other lady in blue if I could enter. As I said I have never visited these public places and have no knowledge of the restrictions then I was inside I took out my phone and called my brother I told him where I was, I saw two policemen and one told me a little rude that I could not use the phone in side, I cut my brother off, I did not say anything to the policeman until later a lady in a dark green shirt told me that I am not supposed to use the phone I can not enter I can not do anything like that but she was very very rude I did not get to answer her either then another lady in blue finally saw me and I saw her , she also told me the same thing, that I can't come in without a bathing suit that I can't use the phone that I have to put it in a lacker that they are going to close soon that everyone has to follow the rules and other things she was very rude too, I explained that it was for my nephew and she told me that I can't be there if I am not going to bathe that I can't just come in and watch the child that brings problems and I kept quiet and said ok! ... remember only the first lady was nice to me and explained a little bit. I leave the place because with all that imagine, and I see a young man with the same blue t-shirt, my brother told me that he was kind and that he told him things and that he was sorry that he could not enter the child because of the rules and also that we did not bring a lock to keep things we had never been in these places. Well my brother, before leaving the lady with the green t-shirt was very rude and very rude to the lady who tried to help me at the beginning, she spoke to her very badly just for the fact that she let me in. I understand that these places are very strict because they are public places, but they have to have better communication they are people with very bad customer service I could be bad but that does not justify that they speak badly to people who have never visited these places and also speak to the staff without professionalism, the city pays them but it is not for them to treat everyone badly and if you are tired of that job and if you do not like your job there is the simplest option leave and give space to someone who can do it in the right way. My experience was 8/4/2025 I do not recommend going to this place if I could I would not give it even one star.

Its alright but I dont think id be coming back. Half the pool was closed but im guessing thats because they only had like 1 lifeguard working the shift. The changing rooms are pretty small and theres like 5-6 single changing areas with a thin curtain covering it and even then that section to change is so small it is hard to do so. The pool was pretty packed not much swimming room without getting splashed in the face constantly or bumping into people so probably just gonna go to a different pool after this 🤷🏾‍♀️

The workers here are raggedy, have no idea how to run a pool. I was standing in line with my children for an hour and wasn’t able to enter the pool because it reached its capacity. Meanwhile they let people who had came out the pool re enter. Hire people who know how to handle those type of situations. Not fair to close the doors on people who been waiting for long period of time

Amazing very clean the only thing I would change is the size of the changing rooms because you can barely move. But it wasn't a problem for me since I wore my bathing suit there and just put a cover up over it
