Student recreation center with an indoor pool, a gym, a basketball court, and a gaming section.
The aquatic center at the Montclair State University Student Recreation Center includes an eight-lane, 25-yard swimming pool and a separate whirlpool/hot tub. While specific daily temperatures are not officially published, similar university recreation center lap pools are generally maintained at a comfortable temperature between 78-82°F (approximately 25.5-27.8°C) for lap swimming and general recreation. The separate whirlpool/hot tub would be kept at a significantly warmer temperature, typically ranging from 100-104°F (37.8-40°C).
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The Montclair University gymnasium facility garners mixed reviews, highlighting both its strengths and significant weaknesses. While appreciated for its amenities like a pool and courts, and the university's overall beauty and cleanliness, the gym area itself is heavily criticized. It is deemed too small and poorly equipped for the student population, with outdated and broken machines, an excessive number of cardio machines compared to strength equipment, and a lack of mirrors in squat racks. A major point of dissatisfaction is the staff, particularly at the front desk, who are frequently described as rude, unhelpful, preoccupied with their phones, and lacking knowledge about facility services. The building manager is also noted for having attitude issues and being inaccessible, leading to frustrating experiences for visitors, especially concerning membership inquiries. The process for obtaining non-student memberships, available at $60/month, is reported to be confusing and challenging, with conflicting information. Non-students are advised to use metered parking. Additionally, clearer signage within the large university campus is suggested.
Reviews
This gym is so small. It is not nearly large enough / equipped enough for the amount of students that attend Montclair university. It’s smaller than most high school gyms. The pool and courts are great but the actual gym equipment is terrible. It needs double the amount of every machine and half as much cardio machines. They also need to be updated. Several of them are broken. Also it’s really strange to have squat racks with no mirrors.
This place is part of the Montclair, it is a gymnasium, a pool, basketball court, and other things, but it is only for students and people that work at the university. And the university in general it's a big and beautiful, well kept, clean, and with many careers options for everyone. The onlu thing they need is to put more signals for the new people, not to get lost in such a bid place. But i will highly recommend it.
The place is great, it has many amenities like a pool, but the staff is very rude and unhelpful. Especially the front desk. They are more on their phone and do not know how to do more than scan IDs, that's why if you request another type of help like what activities are available, what classes, where are specific amenities, they do not know. They offer memberships for people who are not a student, up to $60 per month. Also, if you are not a student, park in the metered sections to avoid fines.
I don’t know where to begin. I went in 3 times in 5 hours because I was told the manager could help me purchase a pass for the week because i’m not a student but i was here with a camp. all 3 times I went in the manager was nowhere to be found. then some guy who was swimming in the pool told me i couldn’t get a membership because i wasn’t a student despite like 50 teenagers my age working out there. i filled out an application just to BE ABLE TO GET A MEMBERSHIP?! The conversation I had with the people there made me want to pull my hair out. Don’t waste your time with this place.
