Lake Thoreau Pool, operated by the Reston Association, is a popular outdoor community swimming facility located at 2040 Upper Lake Dr in Reston, VA. It typically features a main pool for general swimming, a separate wading pool for young children, and amenities such as restrooms and shaded areas. Situated near Lake Thoreau, it serves as a key recreational spot for Reston residents during the summer season, usually operating from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Specific daily or fixed pool temperatures for Lake Thoreau Pool are generally not publicly advertised. As an outdoor community pool in the Northern Virginia area, its water temperature is largely influenced by ambient weather conditions, and while some heating may be employed to take the chill off, it is not consistently maintained at a specific high temperature and can vary throughout the season.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The pool generally receives positive reviews for its cleanliness, nice facilities, and a 10-foot deep diving well. Adult night laps are appreciated, featuring internal pool lights and quick-heating showers. The minimum depth of 3 feet, quickly going to 3.5 feet, makes it less suitable for very young children who don't yet swim. There's conflicting feedback on shade, with some noting a lack of afternoon/evening shade, while others mention surrounding trees providing summer shade. Parking can get crowded. Recently, some pools experienced closures due to staffing shortages (lifeguards calling in sick), equipment failures, and vandalism (specifically broken glass at Lake Thoreau pool). The Reston Association is addressing these issues, holding job fairs to recruit lifeguards, and most facilities were expected to reopen quickly, though there's a user concern about RA potentially wanting permanent closures.
Reviews
The night laps for adults are great. There are lights inside the pool. Also, the showers heat up quickly. We really enjoyed our visit.
Closed due to vanadlism: see article below. (I noticed no work was being done when I was there on 5/29). RA states that some it may be open by the end of the day (5/30) RESTON, VA -- If you were disappointed by the closure of some Reston pools during the Memorial Day weekend, a staffing shortage and vandalism may be to blame. The Reston Association released a statement saying that they were "working to address issues" that resulted in pool closures, most of which were related to a shortage of lifeguards to staff all 15 outdoor pools under the RA's purview. Some lifeguards called in sick, and there were additional problems "related to equipment failures and vandalism," RA stated. "All aquatics facilities, except Lake Thoreau pool, are expected to be open as scheduled today through Friday," the statement adds. "Lake Thoreau pool is being inspected for broken glass after the facility was vandalized prior to the holiday weekend." RA plans to hold two job fairs in hopes of recruiting more lifeguards for the 2019 season, holding one at 6 p.m. on May 30 and another at 4 p.m. on June 13. They will be at Newbridge Pool and Lake Newport Pool, respectively.
Very good I understand that Ra wants to close it permantly but that would upset alot of people that use it
Nice pool and facilities. Parking lot can get crowded. Also surrounded by trees which provide shade in summer.
Nice pool, clean facilities, diving well is 10 feet deep. The pool minimum depth is 3 feet and quickly goes to 3.5 so it's not ideal for little kids who don't yet swim. Not much afternoon/evening shade.
