Popular public swimming pool, known for its 54,450-sq-ft dimensions, free admission, and clean water.
Astoria Pool is an outdoor, unheated public pool operated by NYC Parks. Consequently, its water temperature is not actively regulated and naturally fluctuates with ambient air temperatures and weather conditions during its operational season. Specific temperature readings are not typically provided by the city.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The public pool is widely praised for its cleanliness, spaciousness, and being one of the best in NYC, particularly for early morning lap swimming. Staff are generally seen as nice, though sometimes overwhelmed. However, visitors must adhere to strict rules: only towels, water bottles, and sunscreen are permitted on the pool deck, with no phones, electronics, or outside food/drinks allowed. A personal lock is required for lockers, or one can be purchased on-site. Significant issues include long wait times and lines, especially on weekends. There are strong criticisms regarding inconvenient operating hours (opening at 11 am, mid-day closures for lifeguard breaks forcing re-entry, and an overall lack of organization). Some patrons reported a shortage of lifeguards, poor distribution of staff, and rude management when concerns were raised. Suggestions for improvement include earlier opening times (e.g., 9 am), extended hours (e.g., until 7 pm), and better operational management to handle crowds and staff deployment efficiently.

The pool is very nice and clean. The staff are nice. The pool is very large to my personal preference but it is very spacious. I do recommend to go on a weekday than weekend to avoid crowds. You can only bring your towel, water bottle and I believe sunscreen to the pool deck. You need to bring a lock with you for the locker room.
Hands down the best public pool in NYC. Early morning lap swimming is one of my favorite summer activities in the city. Staff is nice, but clearly overwhelmed with work. The city needs to increase the funds for public parks and pools.
Great pool! Luckily no lines when entering however there can be a bit a of wait I was told. Separate men's and women's bathroom/locker room with a lot of space. Bring a lock to use a free locker (no phones allowed) huge pool area with lots of space. Highly recommend to visit
Very clean, many rules for the safety of everyone, they have done great job to keep the place clean and safe, only bummer we can not even have our phones on the pool. That's not a complaint. No phones, no beach bags, no electronics. No food no drinks except water. You can only enter the pool with your towel sunscreen hat and water. If you don't have lock to lock your things in the locker room, you can buy one from a little kiosk right outside (like i did) or you can risk to let your things without lock in the locker room (i dont think soš) or go home and come back later or tomorrow. The rules apply for everyone, there is police guarding the place, and a lot of staff and security. But I give them a plus because except you can buy food and drinks, they have Greek FrappĆ©?? Yeeešš
Yesterday I was at the pool in Astoria Park. I waited in the heat for about an hour until the entrance started at 11 am, which makes no sense to open at this time when people should be inside. I suggest that the pools should be open at 9 am and not at 11 am. This is not enough. There was a lack of personnel inside after we were informed that some lifeguards would come later. Hundreds of people entered, men, women, children, and strangely two parts of the pool were open. The part for adults and swimmers and another part where hundreds of vacationers were bathing 50 centimeters away from each other. We contacted the person in charge of the pool and in a serious tone he was annoyed by the question and the suggestion we gave him. Why were there 4 lifeguards for adults and 4 for the rest when they could have left 3 for adults who know how to swim who don't need so many lifeguards and put two of them in one of the two empty compartments??? At 12.30 another section opened. At 2.45pm they took us out because the lifeguards had their break time. What's the point of this??? At the height of the heat, you take people out??? Are you still continuing with outdated and meaningless rules?? Okay, we went out and waited in line again to enter at 4pm because that's what we were told. The line of children, women, girls, men, families, etc. etc. was so long that you can't imagine. The line started from the pool door, continued up the stairs and to the parking lot near the football field, the road was full of people trying to get into the pool and cool off a little. The entrance started at 5pm. Do you understand how poorly organized?? Scandalous?? with rude staff and boss???? I don't understand how people who have no idea how to organize work in such cases can manage??? THIS IS INCOMPETENCE. Please take measures to treat vacationers with respect and keep the pool open at least from 9am to 7pm. I hope the pool management changes and hires dedicated and responsible people who don't let vacationers down with their actions and behavior.
