Unfortunately, I had a very disappointing experience here. The quality of the staff was shockingly poor. In the locker room, several employees were screaming and shouting for no apparent reason—even though there were small children around. It was incredibly unpleasant and completely inappropriate for a public facility. Yes, it’s a free pool, but that doesn’t mean there should be no standards. This kind of behavior sets a terrible example for kids. The area itself is generally safe, and everyone was enjoying the pool—until the loud and aggressive staff ruined the atmosphere. I also felt truly sorry for the person they were targeting. She did absolutely nothing wrong. The way she was treated was unfair and upsetting. Management really needs to improve staff training and professionalism. A few other things to keep in mind: • The moment you step inside and take out your phone, you might get yelled at—so be cautious. • You’ll need a key for the locker room, so make sure to bring your own locker key. • It gets extremely crowded in the afternoon, so I highly recommend going early in the morning. On a more positive note, they offer free lunch around noon, which is a nice touch.
Great pool. In general well organized. No shade areas for kids. Dangerous exposure to sun rays. A few friendly experienced staff. Young trainees spend a lot of time on the phone. Locker system is awkward. Many are broken.
The pool itself is really nice, but unfortunately, some of the staff are extremely rude and speak to people as if they’re in a prison. I witnessed one staff member in the locker room screaming at a family with babies over something minor. It escalated to the point where the staff member was walking toward them aggressively, like they were looking to start a fight. I honestly wasn’t sure if I was in a community pool or a jail yard. The staff member kept saying, “It’s a free pool,” as if that excused their behavior. But that doesn’t justify yelling at a mother with her baby. I understand the need for rules, especially in public spaces, but there are respectful ways to communicate them without yelling or intimidation. Many people around were upset and mentioned how that incident ruined their day. Staff members need to show more respect and learn how to handle situations without taking their personal frustrations out on families who are simply there to enjoy their time. This is a family-friendly neighborhood, and the staff should reflect that.
Beautiful pool, restored building, lovely renovation. But the staff is so rude and mean that it will shock your sense of how a human should act to another human. I can't imagine management does not know about the staff culture here. But year after year, nothing is done to improve it. The staff in the locker room screamed at a child until she was in tears, saying that they wanted to take their break. The child was moving too slowly for them.
I went to McCarren Park Pool with my family, but unfortunately, my mom and cousin were not allowed in because, according to staff, they weren’t wearing the “proper” attire. They were actually wearing swim shorts and a sports bra suitable for swimming. At first, the staff checking attire let them through, but then another staff member, an African American woman, stopped them and said they couldn’t enter. Meanwhile, we saw several people inside the pool area wearing regular clothes like t-shirts black . This staff member treated my mom and cousin very rudely and didn’t even let them use the bathroom. We’ve been to this pool several times before and never had an issue like this. It was really disappointing and felt unfair, especially since the rules weren’t enforced equally for everyone. I do not recommend this place if you expect consistent or respectful treatment.
