The Coney Island YMCA, located at 2980 W 29th St, Brooklyn, NY, is a modern community hub opened in 2013. It offers a comprehensive range of programs and facilities aimed at promoting health, wellness, and community engagement. Key features include a state-of-the-art fitness center, a gymnasium, and multiple swimming pools, catering to diverse age groups and fitness levels through various aquatic, fitness, youth, and senior programs. It serves as a vital resource for the Coney Island neighborhood.
Specific daily pool temperatures for the Coney Island YMCA are not publicly listed. However, YMCA facilities typically maintain their pools at temperatures suitable for their intended use: lap pools for fitness are generally kept between 78-82°F (25.5-27.8°C), while warmer teaching or recreational pools often range from 82-86°F (27.8-30°C) for comfort during lessons and general use.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? This facility receives mixed reviews. Positives include modern, superior gym equipment, a quiet workout environment due to no music, and a strong sense of community with various activities for all ages (gym, sauna, pool, table tennis, classes) and charitable initiatives like food assistance. Many appreciate the friendly atmosphere, excellent instructors for group classes, and effective leadership. However, significant drawbacks are frequently cited, including inconveniently short operating hours, especially on weekends and weekdays, and persistent issues with customer service from some staff members, particularly a rude front desk employee and unhelpful pool staff. The pool area also suffers from an inconsistent schedule and overcrowding, making reservations ineffective. Furthermore, there are serious concerns about cleanliness, with roaches reported in the locker rooms, and the lockers themselves are described as non-functional (lacking doors).

-i took off a star because of the terrible operating hours. which gym closes at 5 PM in the summer on weekends when the sun is so high up in the sky? let alone in New York City, i mean come on. -the main thing I liked about this gym is the superior equipment (it is newer and modern, not old junk from a decade back) -most importantly for me though, they do not play music on the gym floor, which means i can work out in peace; i don't have to listen to garbage that all other commercial gyms force you to listen to, especially at high decibel levels -I just wish that they would have longer operating hours on the weekends and the weekdays like most gyms in New York City. this is not a small town in the middle of Idaho or Nebraska or Wyoming.
I’m visiting from NC and I’m treated like I’m not a member. The lady that is Latino and thick lady is very rude.every time I come she makes me show her my id and she acts like she doesn’t remember me but she remembers how many uses I have left For gym usage.10. She is not customer service oriented and when I ask to speak to her manager, he’s in a meeting. I filled out suggestion box Form because I don’t like the non customer service treatment. also they don’t have nowhere for people to sit to fill out Manager at this Y needs to teach his employees to be pleasant with all gym members and if you have a complaint or a concern to not dodge the members of getting a chance to talk to you
I don’t recommend this place to anyone. There is a bad review for a reason. That staff are very rude in the pool. No communication experience. The schedule is changing every minute. The pool is always full. You can’t find a spot. Even though I had a reservation they didn’t allow me to enter because the pool was full. I visited 3 times after paid for a months but I couldn’t enter to the pool. Terrible. Every time the staff make a problem in the pool. They are not helpful. I saw roaches today in the locker room. Just the roaches are experienced here not staffs. By the way the locker rooms are just its name , there is no lockers for the door. I made a cancellation my membership card. Never come here. Horrible!
Great place located near the beach. They have gym, sauna and 🏊♂️ swimming pool and other activities for kids and adults like book reading, drawing and arts and crafts, movies and this place is even helping people in need with food sometimes. Haven't seen this done by any other gyms, which makes this place outstanding compared to others.
One of the best run YMCA that I had been to. Love the atmosphere and friendly greetings from staff members. The table tennis section is always packed with enthusiasts as well as beginners. I got to meet many friends in ping pong as well as the group classes. Love the Taichi and Chi Gong classes by Stella, cardio, Zumba and stretches by Liz, cycling and fitness by Robin, and total body by Gwen! The staff rock 🪨!!! And OFC under the genuinely impressive leadership of Director Moore!!
