The two indoor pools at St. John's Recreation Center are heated for comfortable year-round use. While specific daily temperatures are not typically published, NYC Parks indoor pools are generally maintained in a comfortable range, often around 80-82°F (26.7-27.8°C).
What are people saying (AI review summary)? Reviews indicate that the staff is generally friendly and helpful. The gym is considered affordable and gets the job done, offering a nice cardio and weight room that is larger than some alternatives. However, there are significant concerns regarding long-term broken equipment in both cardio and weight rooms, with some machines being old but functional. Cleanliness in the gym is a major issue, with daily 'cleaning' being superficial and many surfaces never being deeply cleaned, leading to debris accumulation. On the positive side, the free Saturday Zumba class is highly praised, and changing rooms are clean. A major point of contention is the pool, which is frequently closed despite schedule information, leading to frustration among members who pay for access. Despite these issues, some members have had long-term positive experiences, with children learning to swim there, highlighting a sense of community.

Staff is mostly friendly, and mostly helpful. Gym is nice, cardio room and weight room have long term broken equipment. Months, years!!! Rooms are ‘cleaned’ daily but it is clear they just wipe the grips and seats - some surfaces are NEVER cleaned and just accumulate debris. One deep clean a month would make a world of difference here.
The free Zumba class on Saturdays at l10 am is great! Bring a lock as you aren’t allowed to leave your coats and bags out. Luckily the changing rooms are clean.
Considering the gym is so affordable, it gets the job done. With some TLC the weight room could go from good to great. Many of the machines function but are old. If the gym could replace those I think the weight room would be awesome. It’s a lot bigger than the one I used to go to at McCarren Play Center.
