Fitness center with a swimming pool, basketball court, and various programs for kids.
The aquatic center at the Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA typically features two pools. The lap pool is generally maintained around 80-82 degrees Fahrenheit, ideal for fitness swimming. Additionally, there is a warm water or program pool, which is usually heated to approximately 86-88 degrees Fahrenheit, suitable for swim lessons, water therapy, and family aquatic activities.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? Reviews for the facility present a mixed but generally concerning picture. Many patrons commend the outstanding cleanliness of the facility, praising the diligent janitorial staff for their constant efforts, especially in high-traffic and wet areas like the pool deck and fitness zones. The overall staff is described as friendly and helpful in one review, and the facility layout is noted as nice. However, significant negative feedback points to several issues: the men's locker room is described as musty with rusty lockers, inoperative sauna, moldy shower grout, and a closed pool in one instance. The children's playroom is criticized for having old, broken, and uninteresting toys, with a plea for parents to contribute working ones. Furthermore, the professionalism of the Aquatic Director is strongly questioned after she responded defensively to a reported safety hazard (slippery pool area) where children subsequently fell, showing a lack of concern. Separately, the front desk staff are consistently described as appearing miserable, uninterested, and unhelpful, significantly detracting from the customer experience and leading to calls for better customer service training.

The overall staff is friendly and helpful. This place is super clean. The janitorial staff is outstanding. Every time I visit this YMCA there are several people keeping things clean. In the heat of the summer, patrons tracking in water from the outdoor pool, yet the staff is right there wiping it up, trying to keep it dry. Walk through the fitness areas, weight room, children’s play zone and you will see someone cleaning and tightening things up. Keep it up and Thank you for caring about what you do!!!
1st time back after 10 years. Machines were good and available. Mens locker room was musty, lockers were rusty, sauna was inoperative, pool was closed and there was mold in the grout for the men's showers. I remember this being a very good facility that was busy at 0700 but today it was almost empty.
DEAR PARENTS who send their children to playrooms (up to 3 years old), have you seen the condition of the toys? Not a single working one. Everything is very old and not interesting for your children! Please, let's unite and bring at least one working toy! No need to bring broken junk. Just if everyone spends $20-30, your children will happily go there and play with normal toys! And it will be easier for the teachers that the children are busy, because when there are a lot of people, they can't keep up with everyone, and there are simply not enough toys for everyone.
When my family informed the Aquatic Director of a slippery spot by the outdoor pool where multiple kids had fallen she replied very defensively and said the kids parents should supervise them. One minute later a one year old fell and hit her head on the concrete. When we informed her of the situation she responded very coldly. The lifeguards were very kind and wanted to help, but the director's lack of concern and professionalism was very concerning. Made me wonder if it was safe to be at this facilities pool at all. So sad, we love the Y.
First time visiting this YMCA to enjoy family open swim. My kids were excited to explore, as was I after a long work week. The facility was clean, nice layout from what I could see. The reason I gave 3 stars was because as I entered and exited, the staff were a miserable looking bunch. Immediately, the excitement drained from my family walking up to the front desk and seeing three staff members who looked tired, uninterested, lost, and could barely hear the defeated "Hi." Than, being that it was my first time and unaware of how things are run, when it was time to leave I addressed the staff again to confirm if where I was going to exit was correct, considering they had already closed. Even my kids asked what was wrong with them, because all three people at the desk just stared at me. It took three times and for me to uncomfortably yell my question, for them to speak and still two out of the three stood there like statues just staring at me as if they got caught committing a crime and clueless. Whoever's in charge of hiring, please explain to these staff members what customer service looks like, especially in this type of establishment.
