The best gym in NYC! Facilities are top of the line, the personnel is very friendly and the smoothies are just the best. Expensive if you are a tourist visiting (107$ day pass), but the experience is great!
I actually only had a trial day here, but it was the most amazing fitness center in NYC. If I had lived closer, and it was easier to get to, I would have gotten a membership and been there all the time. It is a huge complex by the water, with a pool, indoor track, yoga room, basketball and volleyball courts, and more. It also has a great smoothie bar and really nice, not crowded change rooms.
Would not recommend for the price paid. Imagine this. You pay nearly $300 for a gym and you go in on a Sunday for a day of relaxation at their hot tub. It's closed (broken). That about sums up my experience here: things are broken and the staff can't and won't do anything to help. My experience in gyms in NYC: 1 year with Lifetime, 1.5 years with equinox, almost 2 years with Chelsea Piers... would recommend Lifetime in NYC; cleanest and newest facilities. Poor facilities (though near comprehensive equipment) and disappointing (albeit friendly) customer service. Make sure you understand that to cancel you need to give 45 days notice if you don't have a doctor's note or whatnot. Dirty laundry list, in no particular order: - THEIR WIFI IS THE WORST. Doesn't cover the whole gym, or cover the sundeck area. If you take a call on their wifi in the gym, you will inevitably be dropped if you walk 5 meters. The barcode for the scanner at entry takes a minute to load on their wifi... both equinox and lifetime would never. - SELLS DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS and does not offer exchange. Hasn't been a month of wearing and their products are already broken (see picture). They then blamed me for breaking it, despite none of my other clothes that I wear more frequently having that issue. - THEY WATER DOWN THEIR SHAMPOO - it's literally 50% water compared to the actual Maelin & Goetz label - The bathrooms are not cleaned frequently enough during peak hours and are often rancid, the toilet paper is sandpaper - SHOWERS NOT MAINTAINED: none of them have any water pressure and need to be snaked (they haven't in the nearly 2 years) - The men's steam room / sauna often beeps uncontrollably - The pool and other water facilities are either constantly 100% booked or broken (either temperature or chemical mix, at least 3 weekends this year have had the pool broken) - They require 45 days notice for cancellation - Most people no-show to classes: I was waitlist number 12 and still get in, which while nice is also frustrating that they don't have any policy that prevents last minute notifications - The staff is trained on very canned statements that at first are friendly but after a while are creepy. E.g. if you ask for a bandaid they always ask if you got hurt in the gym (because they're probably trying to avoid liability in some shady manner) - Their outdoor areas are really noisy and not very relaxing for the sensitive hearing: there are 3 incredibly loud fans near both the east and west sundeck that drone in the background - They charge you to freeze your membership ($30) - Their invoice on app does not make sense and may not be actually reflective of what's getting billed (overall the app is really bad) - The sunscreen they supply is grimy and sticky...
Chelsea Fitness is the BEST gym in the city!! I have been a member for more than 20 years and it just keeps getting better and better! Amazing staff, extremely talented and motivating teachers, extraordinary diversity in classes, gorgeous facilities, fantastic new salted pool, two sun decks that make you feel on vacation for a minute, (outdoor yoga classes coming back June 1!) so whether you need to release toxins, want to train for a triathlon, stay in shape, feel strong in your daily life or simply need the endorphins for mental health I promise Chelsea fitness will never disappoint!
Overall, it's a very, very good gym. However, I'm extremely disappointed with the basketball courts. When I signed up I was told that it was three full-size courts, except they're not full-size courts, dishonesty or lack of knowledge doesn't make any sense when it's a simple question. And there is a railing on both courts on the left side, which makes it impossible to shoot deep threes(extremely frustrating). I hope they're able to fix these issues because the rest of the gym is very good.
