What are people saying (AI review summary)? The reviews highlight a generally positive experience at the Central YMCA and its aquatics department, praising the clean facilities, helpful and polite staff, and excellent, patient instructors, particularly in adaptive and stage 1 swim classes. Specific shout-outs are given to Nana for her patience with a child with ASD and the value of adaptive swim programs for children with special needs due to attentive instructors and a supportive environment. Amenities like the gym, pool, sauna, and clean bathrooms are also appreciated. However, several critical areas for improvement are noted: the La Central Aquatics department needs to drastically improve scheduling and reduce distractions during lessons, especially for individuals with disabilities who are sensitive to noise and focus issues. There's a desire for more consistent youth sports programs, particularly soccer, and more flexible youth access policies for facilities like the gym for children. A significant concern raised is locker security, with a report of theft from a locked locker, prompting a warning to others as the facility disclaims responsibility for lost items.

I would like to say thank you to Nana my son’s swim instructor. My child has ASD and Nana was always kind and patient with him according to his disability needs! She is definitely a joy to encounter! However the La Central Aquatics department has to drastically improve scheduling times For the pool and private lessons, because having various amounts of adults/activities happening during lessons is extremely unprofessional and uncomfortable for individuals with disabilities that have issues with noises and focusing.
Overall, I’ve had a great experience at the Central YMCA! The membership has been worth it for me and my family. The place is pretty stacked: they’ve got a solid gym with everything you need, a really nice pool that’s perfect for both workouts and splashing around, plus a sauna (yes, bestie, I said SAUNA 😌). The gymnasium is spacious and clean, and the bathrooms? Super clean and actually big enough to get changed without feeling like you're in a closet. 🧼👏 But let me keep it real—this is why it’s not a full 5-star. They don’t offer soccer that often, which was kind of a letdown since my son lives for the sport. We were hoping for more consistent soccer programs, but it’s pretty rare to find anything scheduled. And something that really frustrated me… they didn’t let my 11-year-old son go into the gym. He wasn’t being rowdy or anything—just curious and respectful, but they still said no. I get rules, but sometimes a little flexibility goes a long way. 🙃 All that said, it’s still a great place to work out, relax, and spend time as a family. Just hoping they expand their youth access policies and bring soccer back into the spotlight. ⚽💪 Also, when I checked the schedule, I saw it was every Saturday from 11 am-1 pm, and I was like, "They just glaze basketball like, why don't they have it daily?" I would recommend, just with a few wishes for improvement. — A loyal YMCA mom trying to raise an athlete 😂💖
I'm currently taking the Stage 1 Swimming class, and so far, it has been great. The staff is very polite, the facility is clean, the instructor is great, and I feel like I have been making progress. I would recommend it.
I enrolled my son in their Adaptive Swim class, and my son loves it. I have had difficulty finding a swim class my son likes, but this class has been perfect for him. The instructor is very attentive and patient, and because I am with him, he feels more confident, something many other swim classes do not offer. I also have come to enjoy the community of the other families. He doesn't want to leave when it is over. The extra pool, which is separate from the lap pool, makes the difference. The facilities are also clean and well kept. The price is reasonable, even for non-members. I looked at other Adaptive Swim programs, and they cost much more. I am so happy I found this class. The staff at the reception desk is also very helpful. It is located near The Hub in Mott Haven, so there are both the 2 and 5 train lines and many busses that stop nearby. I also enjoy stopping by Cookies afterward to buy some essentials for my son.
Don’t leave your wallets in the locker. I learnt the hard way. I left my wallet in my locker, locked it and went for a swim for only 30 min. Money was taken out of my wallet. Since they have signs in the lockers saying they are not responsible for the contents in the lockers, it’s not even worth reporting to them but then also I don’t think I am the first victim. This is more of a caution to anyone going there
