Clean pool at a recreation center known for being kid-friendly, offering swim lessons.
As an NYC Parks outdoor pool, Red Hook Pool is unheated. Its water temperature is therefore subject to ambient weather conditions and is not actively regulated to a specific warm temperature.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? Red Hook Pool receives mixed reviews. Many visitors praise it as a 'summer happy place' with kind staff, clear water, and a safe, uncrowded environment ideal for new swimmers, especially during weekday sessions. Its free admission and attentive lifeguards are often highlighted, despite some noting that institutional bathrooms need renovation. However, significant issues are also reported, including unexpected and prolonged closures, sometimes with the pool being dirty or empty. There are widespread complaints about inconsistent and strictly enforced rules, particularly regarding swimming attire, with some staff described as rude or condescending. Other concerns include lifeguards taking frequent breaks, supervisors mishandling personal belongings by cutting locker locks, and frequent early closures often attributed to 'contaminated water' or crowd control issues, leading to frustration for patrons, who are advised to call ahead before visiting due to unpredictability.

Red Hook Pool is my summer happy place! I practically lived here while pregnant—floating in that cool water was everything. The staff is always so kind and welcoming, which makes such a difference. Now I’m counting down the days until I can bring my toddler and make new memories together. Can’t wait to be back! 🩵👶🌞
Personnel it’s nice, but they haven’t informed the pool is not going to be open for the next 4 weeks, we just went today 6/28/2025 and it was closed and they said it’s going to be closed for the next 4 weeks. I saw the pool and not even filled with water and very dirty
The kids were thrilled, and the water is crystal clear and the guards focus on safety! It’s a 4’ deep Olympic-size pool that is perfect for a weekday visit during the 11 AM to 3 PM session. The pool was not crowded, and one area was roped off for swim lessons. This location is ideal for new swimmers because it is not chaotic, and kids can mostly stand in the 4-foot water, with a slightly deeper 5-foot section toward the middle. Be aware that the dress code (as noted in another review) seems Byzantine. The protocol is enforced here, but it’s worth it. Four stars for the institutional showers and bathrooms that need to be renovated; however, I’ll take a clean pool and great lifeguards over renovated bathroom facilities. The park staff is friendly yet firm in that famous NYC way. Best of all, it’s free!
The place has strict rules that are inconsistent. My niece who went up earlier was let in without issue. My daughter followed shortly but another woman was at the front. Told her she can't go in because she has the wrong swimming attire. My niece had the same one and they didn't tell her anything of the sort. The second lady was rude and condescending towards my family. Then they kicked everyone out because of the weather and the men and boys were told to leave immediately but women could stay to ready themselves. My young son needs time to get ready. We tried this place out because it was closer. Now we know, even if we have to drive further away, so be it. We aren't going back.
This pool gets worse and worse every year the life guards seem to want to be on break more than actually working. The supervisors will call children to bring their parents a snack or keys but won’t announce that they clipped your lock and removed everything from your locker because “someone thought it was their belongings” 95% of the time the workers are going to close the pool after an hour of opening because they can’t control the people they let in. With the excuse of “contaminated water” With that being said If you are not in /close to the neighborhood call before making a trip on a HOT day here because they might've closed that session early 😂
