Swim classes and other fitness programs are offered at this gym featuring indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a basketball court and a clean changing room.
While specific temperatures are not explicitly listed on the Shoreview YMCA's public website, the aquatics center provides pools designed for different functions. The lap pool is typically maintained at a cooler temperature, generally ranging from 79-82°F (26-28°C), suitable for exercise and lap swimming. The warm water leisure pool is usually kept warmer, often between 88-92°F (31-33°C), ideal for relaxation, therapy, and family enjoyment. A splash pad and hot tub are also available, with the hot tub typically much warmer.
What are people saying (AI review summary)? The YMCA generally provides a functional fitness and recreation experience, with positive notes on spacious locker rooms and a fun outdoor pool. However, several operational and policy issues are frequently raised. Common criticisms include overly strict and numerous rules, particularly in family and baby pool areas, which are perceived as excessive and hindering enjoyment. Visitors also report frustrations with unexpected facility limitations like unannounced indoor pool closures, early closing times for pools and saunas, and broken equipment such as swimsuit water extractors. Other concerns include lockers requiring personal locks, a small facility footprint with a cramped walking track, and instances of poor customer service. Families often feel underserved due to late family swim openings and insufficient dedicated swimming lanes.

This YMCA provides a solid fitness and recreation experience, though a few operational hiccups were noticeable during our recent visit. When we arrived, we learned that only the outdoor swimming area was open, which was fine given the weather, but it would’ve been helpful to know in advance—especially for those planning lap swims or bringing younger children. The women’s locker room was spacious and had plenty of changing areas and private showers, which we appreciated. It’s clear that the facility aims to accommodate a range of needs and privacy preferences. However, the swimsuit water extractor in the women’s locker room was out of order, which was a bit of an inconvenience. We had to walk over to the family locker room to use the one there. While it’s not a huge issue, it’s something to be aware of, especially when managing time or children post-swim. On a practical note, the lockers do not accept quarters, which might surprise some first-time visitors. Be sure to bring your own lock or check in advance for locker options. Despite a few minor inconveniences, the Shoreview YMCA remains a functional and family-friendly facility. With its outdoor pool, ample amenities in the locker rooms, and standard YMCA features, it’s a good option for regular workouts or occasional visits—just be prepared for small maintenance or access issues from time to time.
Although the pool and outdoor water area is fun, the insane amount of rules ruins much of the experience. If you are bringing young children be prepared for every rule under the sun, many that seem to have no purpose. I understand water safety is so important, but many of the rules have nothing to do with it and you are watched like a hawk wherever you go. It’s very strange. Have been to many water parks and water play areas and have never experienced anything like it. WAY over the top!
I really like this gym even though it's kind of small it has everything you need. If you guys are open until 9 I should be able to use anything in the gym all the way up until closing time and not be rushed out the door. I kind of understand the pool closing a little early but in my opinion that should be open all the way until close too. I have no idea why the sauna closes 15 mins early either and it didn't use too I've been coming to this gym for almost a half a year now and just recently that has been happening. 9 o'clock isn't even late. Other than that it's a decent gym.
Terrible customer service. I had one request regarding membership and it wasn’t done so I ended up doing it on my own online. Facility was small but had the basics. Walking track was really small compared to others in the area. Sauna is why they exist.
I’ve always been extremely disappointed at how this y doesn’t cater to the MANY families that join each summer for the pool. Family swim isn’t open until noon?!?! Unacceptable! Only one lane taken down for the full family swim. Really??? Baby pool has an obnoxious amount of rules that make us all walk on eggshells instead have fun. Last summer we will do this. I’ll take my money to como pool if things don’t change.
